MADISONVILLE, Tenn. (UTC/The Loop) — A young East Tennessee Marine has been killed in combat in Afghanistan, according to his grandfather.

Troy Watson told The Knoxville News Sentinel several Marines brought him word on Saturday that his 21-year-old grandson Lance Cpl. Frankie Watson of Madisonville was fatally shot while on two-man patrol (http://bit.ly/qLORb0 ).

Before joining the Marine Corps, Frankie Watson worked as a deputy for the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office and as a police officer for the Madisonville Police Department.

Sheriff’s Lt. Jennifer Bledsoe said the department is shocked by Watson’s death.

The elder Watson said he last talked with his grandson last week and said the Marine hoped that one day he could help guard the president. He was scheduled to return home in five months.
