JACKSON, Tenn. (UTC/The Loop) — A West Tennessee man has been sentenced to 40 years in prison on his “best interest” plea in the kidnapping and killing of a Henderson woman.
Marcus Thompson pleaded to charges of facilitation of first-degree murder, facilitation of aggravated kidnapping and facilitation of tampering with evidence, according to The Jackson Sun (http://bit.ly/nzI1ee).
The Alford plea Thompson entered last week does not admit guilty, but acknowledges the state likely has sufficient evidence to convict a suspect at trial.
Thompson was indicted in the shooting death of 61-year-old Carolyn Ward, who was kidnapped outside a Henderson grocery store in March 2009.
A co-defendant, John Freeland, was convicted and sentenced to death. Another suspect, Tashundra Mosley, cut a plea deal and would have testified against Thompson.
