David Nordy, Jr., an Electrical Engineering junior and the president of the student chapter of the IEEE, was been selected as an IEEE Power and Energy Society (PES) Scholar. David competed with students from all across the country for this honor. The award comes with $2,000/year for up to three years of funding.

The IEEE PES Scholarship Plus Initiative targets students preparing for careers in the power industry. Students are required to take at least three power engineering courses. While many universities scaled back their power engineering curricula in years past, UTC has retained a strong program with multiple power and energy electives available for students to take.

OMICRON, the world leader in power systems testing equipment, will be bringing their roadshow bus to UTC’s “Get On Board” Day event on Friday, September 9th. The roadshow bus will be found in the parking lot on the east side of the Engineering, Math, and Computer Science (EMCS) Building from 11:30 to 1:00. A classroom-on-wheels, the bus contains the latest in OMICRON testing equipment as well as a model transformer.

Please join Dean Sutton, the Electrical Engineering Faculty, and Mr. Preston Swafford, Executive Vice President and Chief Nuclear Officer of TVA, on August 11th at 9:00am on the 4th Floor in Room 402 for the presentation of $8,000 to buy large screen monitors to be mounted on the wall of the TVA / ETAP Power Simulation Lab.

The Department of Electrical Engineering is hosting a free, two-day workshop on Diagnostic Measurements on Power Transformers. The workshop, sponsored by Omicron electronics, will feature industry-leading presenters.

The Transformer Workshop is designed to provide you the essential information needed to determine the condition of your transformer assets. Participants will be introduced to the most modern and effective test techniques and practices that can be applied to power transformers today. Participants will learn transformer theory, diagnostic test methods, and data analysis strategies. All subjects presented are adequate for all levels of expertise, and all examples are derived directly from field experiences. This is a two-day event with four instructors bringing different areas of technical expertise.

The course objectives are to understand transformer failure modes and basic as well as advanced diagnostic test methods to assess the condition of transformers and ancillary equipment. The instructors will share their expertise in the area of diagnostic testing and analysis through presentation of actual field measurement and case studies.

Joshua Waller, a rising  junior in UTC’s Department of Electrical Engineering, was awarded the prestigious Mario C. and Grace B. Charles Foundation Scholarship for the 2011-2012 academic year. This $10,000 award is in addition to the Edwin Duckett Scholarship and the William Q. Gurley Scholarship that Mr. Waller was previously awarded. A veteran of the Coast Guard, Mr. Waller is the Vice President of the student chapter of IEEE. He has volunteered in numerous capacities with the College of Engineering, including lab development, donation solicitation, and wiring on the Mini Baja Competition vehicle.
