As organizations increasingly rely on data to guide decision-making, the demand for professionals with analytics skills continues to grow. The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga\u2019s Master of Science in Data Analytics<\/a> (MSDA) program in the Gary W. Rollins College of Business is prepares students for careers in data analytics through applied learning and industry-relevant coursework.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The MSDA program at UTC is recognized by TechGuide<\/a> among the top online programs. By combining technical instruction with business applications, students get experience working with real data and real-world problems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe core pillars of our program are big data, cloud computing and AI,\u201d said Department Head of Data Analytics Beni Asllani. \u201cOur updated curriculum is what sets us apart from other MSDA programs. Students are doing more than coding and managing data, they\u2019re building models for AI to streamline processes for companies.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Here are four reasons to get a Master of Science in Data Analytics at from UTC.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

1. Hands-on learning and research opportunities<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n

Students in the MSDA program gain early exposure to applied analytics through coursework, research and professional opportunities. MSDA student Patrick Lutz said the program helped him see himself as a data analyst.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cBeing immersed in data analytics is really cool because it just makes you believe that you are a data analyst,\u201d Lutz said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Lutz said his graduate assistantship has allowed him to work with multiple faculty members on research projects using real-world data.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI\u2019m working at the university for a few different professors, and I\u2019m getting to do some research with them and really work with real-world data on real-world problems,\u201d he said. \u201cThat\u2019s been kind of a dream come true.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

2. Curriculum focused on industry skills<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n

The MSDA curriculum is designed to provide students with both technical and analytical skills. Coursework includes data management, programming for analytics, data visualization, predictive modeling and advanced analytics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Courses are taught by faculty with professional experience in the analytics field. MSDA student Sara Marc said access to industry-experienced professors has been one of the most valuable aspects of the program.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cOne of the most impactful parts is being connected with professors who work full-time in the industry, who are giving real-world advice and teaching the programs and applications that data analysts use,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

3. Preparing students before, during and after the program<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n

Faculty support and applied coursework help students build confidence in technical tools throughout the program. Gavin Thompson is a current MSDA student in the program, who encourages incoming students to gain basic familiarity with analytics tools before starting the program.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe best piece of advice coming into the program is to take a look at some of the programs you see online, such as SQL and Python,\u201d Thompson said. \u201cThey teach everything from the basics, but if you already know a little before coming in, you\u2019re in a great position to succeed.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Graduates of the MSDA program are prepared for roles such as data analyst, business intelligence analyst, data scientist and analytics consultant. The program\u2019s flexible delivery options also make it accessible to both full-time students and working professionals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

4. Applied experience beyond the classroom<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n

In addition to core coursework, students complete applied learning experiences through internships, practicum projects or capstone projects. These opportunities allow students to apply classroom knowledge to professional settings and develop portfolios for future employment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Marc encouraged prospective students to take a thoughtful approach to the program.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIf you\u2019re considering the MSDA program, take your time to really understand the material,\u201d she said. \u201cPractice using the applications the professors talk about and look for additional support through textbooks, online resources or tutorials.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Through applied coursework, faculty support and real-world experience, UTC\u2019s MSDA program prepares students to meet the growing demand for data-driven professionals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
