The deadline to submit events for the Welcome Week calendar is Thursday, Aug. 8.We’re seeking UTC faculty and staff volunteers for the following Welcome Week initiatives:Oak Street Roast is our annual Welcome Week kickoff event, and we need help from UTC faculty and staff to make it a success. Oak Street Roast 2024 is from 7-9 p.m. on Sunday, Aug. 18, on Chamberlain Field. This event typically sees between 1,300-1,600 students. UTC faculty and staff volunteers are needed to assist with various parts of this event. Multiple volunteer activity options and time shifts are available. Click here to learn more about the event, what help is needed and to sign up.We are seeking UTC faculty and staff to welcome our new and returning students to campus for the start of the semester by volunteering at a Welcome Table. Our volunteers will greet students as they make their way on campus and distribute snacks, water and Welcome Week information. Multiple locations and time shifts are available for both days. Time shifts are one hour long, and shifts overlap to ensure continued coverage. This newsletter is distributed to all students on Monday mornings around 9:30 a.m. during the fall and spring semesters. All student organizations, University departments and offices are invited to submit events and announcements for the newsletter each week. The deadline for submissions is 9 a.m. the Friday before the event occurs or the announcement should be made.Events that exist in MocSync with visibility set as “The Public” or “Students and Staff at UTC” will be automatically included in the Scrappy Newsletter each week if they are added by the weekly submission deadlineEvents that exist outside of MocSync and announcements/deadlines must be submitted via the Scrappy Newsletter Submission Form by the weekly submission deadline. The next Scrappy Newsletter will be distributed on Monday, Aug. 19.______HOUSE CALLS 2024House Calls 2024 will be Tuesday, Sept. 10. This is the department initiative for campus partners to help us check in on our students after living on campus within those crucial first six weeks of school. We will provide resources but also engage in meaningful conversations right at the resident’s door. We would love many different offices across campus to participate so our residents can have a versatile experience.The training will be from 5-6 p.m. with dinner provided in the West Campus Multipurpose Room. We will be going to all resident spaces from 6-8 p.m. to check in with residents. Please fill out theform before Monday, Sept. 9, and communicate with Sabrina Sims if your plans have changed or if you have questions.Outstanding People of UTCChattanooga Mocs men’s basketball junior standout Honor Huff (above) has been selected to the NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Student-Athlete Engagement Group, representing the Southern Conference, ahead of the 2024-25 competition season.A platform underneath the NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Oversight Committee (MBOC) umbrella, the newly implemented student-athlete engagement group was formed with a goal of amplifying student-athlete voices in basketball on key initiatives, legislation and issues.______The Chattanooga Mocs men’s golf team, coached by Blaine Woodruff (above), earned the Golf Coaches Association of America Outstanding Team Academic Award for maintaining a team GPA of 3.0 or higher. Led by Cobalt Golf All-America Scholars Samuel Espinosa and Paul Conroy, the team achieved success both on the course, with two tournament wins, and academically, with seven players making the Dean’s List.______Chattanooga Mocs senior defender Reuben Lowery III (above, left) is taking on additional responsibilities. He’s no longer serving as a leader as a team captain in the Scenic City. Lowery was named to the prestigious NCAA Football Oversight Committee/Student-Athlete Connection Group. This national role begins this year and continues until June 30, 2025, representing the FCS among 12 individuals across all NCAA divisions.______On Wednesday, July 31, emergency responders and volunteers from the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga, the city of Chattanooga and Hamilton County came to campus for an armed intruder emergency training exercise.Hosted by the UTC Department of Public Safety, the exercise simulated an armed intruder scenario in Lupton Hall, allowing participants to practice their response procedures.______Check out these Mocs making news:Dr. Cecelia Wigal, a professor in Mechanical Engineering and former associate dean, is returning to the College of Engineering and Computer Science’s Dean’s Office as one of the college’s associate deans. Wigal will be working closely with faculty and staff to promote undergraduate programs and guide progress in the college.A Times Free Press feature on the Marching Mocs included conversations with Director of Bands Randall Coleman, music department head Kenyon Wilson and junior drum major Dylan Campbell.Mark Your CalendarIt’s time for the annual Mocs Resource Fair and School Supply Give-A-Way, which takes place from 2-4 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 15, in Lupton Hall. Departments can sign up to table and sponsor a school supply here. If you have questions, contact Crystal Edenfield at crystal-edenfield@utc.edu.______The College of Arts and Sciences is hosting a Welcome Week bash for incoming freshmen from 2-4 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 23, in Lupton 120. There will be free Clumpies ice cream for CAS majors, and students will have the chance to speak to representatives from their new departments.______UTC is excited to participate in the United Way of Greater Chattanooga’s city-wide “Day of Caring” volunteer service initiative on Friday, Sept. 20. Make your plans to join your fellow Mocs, the United Way and 500-plus volunteers from around Chattanooga. Your servant leadership hands are needed for efforts such as cleaning, sorting, painting, mowing, mulching, moving debris and writing cards.UTC volunteers have an opportunity to address community needs at project sites across the city. Interested volunteers need to be available from 7:45 a.m.-12:30 p.m. A grab-and-go breakfast, transportation and lunch will be available. The Maclellan Gym is now the new home of the eSports Complex and the IT Solutions Center for fall 2024. EXPAND TN (Experiential Learning in Advanced Manufacturing towards Novel and Diverse Career Opportunities for Rural Tennessee Students) was successfully proposed by Dr. Bradley Harris, director of the Chemical Engineering program at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga.______Getting your graduate degree at UTC just got more affordable with the expansion of the state’s lottery-funded scholarship program. Qualified students can now use their remaining Tennessee HOPE Scholarship funds to pursue a master’s degree at UTC immediately after or while completing their undergraduate degrees.______The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga raised $60,056,026 from 6,762 donors during the fiscal year 2024. This is the single largest fundraising year in UTC’s history. This fundraising total represents a 325% increase from the previous fiscal year in dollars raised to support students, faculty and staff.______Here are some other recent UTC stories featured in the Newsroom:A new partnershipbetween the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga and Erlanger will provide UTC students the opportunity to obtain their Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) license for free and secure employment at Erlanger while also training Erlanger’s non-certified medical assistants.In Dr. Amy Brock-Hon’s first-year geology classes, the city of Chattanooga will serve as the laboratory. The class, named “MOCS Explore Chattanooga,” combines two geology classes and a lab and is a part of the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga’s “A Moc’s First Year” program—which was designed to help first-year students build community. WUTCA recent episode of “Scenic Roots” on WUTC-FM featured a conversation with Dr. Kelly Arnold, the founder and medical director of Clínica Médicos.
