Dr. Tian Li is Featured Speaker for Friday’s Gig City Goes Quantum “MocTalk: Quantum Sensing” Event

Quantum technology is coming—and with it comes new opportunities in education, jobs and business.

UTC’s own Dr. Tian Li, an assistant professor of physics, is the featured speaker for a “Gig City Goes Quantum” presentation at noon on Friday, April 21, in the UTC Center for Professional Education in the James R. Mapp Building.

Li’s presentation about quantum sensing is free and open to UTC students, faculty and staff.

UTC is a leading collaborator in EPB’s “Gig City Goes Quantum” initiative launching the country’s first industry-led, commercially available quantum network, on which UTC will have a node.

Li and his fellow UTC researchers have a lot of ideas for experiments, he said, and quantum research capabilities hold great promise for students, too. Long-term plans call for UTC to launch a certificate program for training technology professionals in quantum information science—particularly non-physicists such as bankers, programmers and telecom engineers. Following that would be developing a minor in quantum science and—eventually—a major.
