It is a moment each year that invites us to pause, to look around, and to appreciate the often-unseen work that supports how we live, move, connect, and grow. It prompts a simple but powerful question:&nbsp;<strong><em>What would our city look like without engineers?<\/em><\/strong>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The truth&nbsp;is,&nbsp;engineering is woven into&nbsp;nearly everything&nbsp;around us.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Every bridge that connects us.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Every power system that sustains us.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Every advanced manufacturing line that employs our citizens.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Every fiber connection that helped earn Chattanooga the title of Gig City.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Behind each of these milestones is disciplined problem&nbsp;solving, creative design, and technical courage.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Chattanooga\u2019s story is, in many ways, an engineering story<\/strong>. From industrial innovation to digital infrastructure, from sustainable mobility to energy resilience, this city has repeatedly chosen to solve hard problems with technical excellence and collaboration.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga College of Engineering and Computer Science, we are proud to contribute to that legacy. We have been here for&nbsp;nearly 50&nbsp;years, growing generations of engineers who now shape our city and region. Today, more than 1,750&nbsp;students are preparing in our classrooms and laboratories to step into the roles many of&nbsp;you&nbsp;support. They are gaining skills in curiosity, connection, critical thinking, creating value, and communication, as well as hands-on experience through internships, co-ops, and senior design projects sponsored by organizations represented&nbsp;across Chattanooga and&nbsp;beyond.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That partnership is not peripheral to our mission \u2014 it&nbsp;<em>is<\/em>&nbsp;our mission. We are building not just graduates, but contributors to Chattanooga\u2019s innovation ecosystem.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But Engineers Week is not only about honoring past achievements. It is about recognizing the responsibility that comes with&nbsp;expertise. Engineering is, at its core, an act of optimism \u2014 the conviction that systems can be improved, infrastructure can be strengthened, and communities can be elevated.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When I look at the students entering our pipeline,&nbsp;diverse, ambitious, and deeply committed to impact.&nbsp;I am confident that the next chapter of Chattanooga\u2019s engineering story will be even more dynamic than the last.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So, this week is both a celebration and a challenge:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>To mentor intentionally.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>To innovate boldly.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>To collaborate across sectors, both industry and academia alike.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>And&nbsp;to ensure that the next generation sees engineering not only as a profession, but as a calling to serve.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Here\u2019s&nbsp;to the engineers who lift our&nbsp;community, and&nbsp;to the students who will one day&nbsp;follow in your footsteps.
