The conference took place at Florida State University, and brought together scholars from around the world to share their ideas and findings. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blog.utc.edu\/app\/uploads\/sites\/76\/2026\/03\/IMG_75142.jpeg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"868\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.utc.edu\/app\/uploads\/sites\/76\/2026\/03\/IMG_75142-1024x868.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-3448\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.utc.edu\/app\/uploads\/sites\/76\/2026\/03\/IMG_75142-1024x868.jpeg 1024w, https:\/\/blog.utc.edu\/app\/uploads\/sites\/76\/2026\/03\/IMG_75142-768x651.jpeg 768w, https:\/\/blog.utc.edu\/app\/uploads\/sites\/76\/2026\/03\/IMG_75142-580x492.jpeg 580w, https:\/\/blog.utc.edu\/app\/uploads\/sites\/76\/2026\/03\/IMG_75142-610x517.jpeg 610w, https:\/\/blog.utc.edu\/app\/uploads\/sites\/76\/2026\/03\/IMG_75142.jpeg 1280w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Dr. Chikumbu&#8217;s paper, part of his larger ongoing research project, examined the role played by the Second World War in the rise of African nationalism. It specifically explored the mobilization, recruitment, wartime, demobilization, and post-war experiences of African and Colored servicemen who participated in the war from Southern Rhodesia (Colonial Zimbabwe). It examined how their experiences revived African nationalism from the 1940s to the late 1970s. Her argued that the war engendered political awareness, anti-colonial sentiments, attitudes, and eventually political activity that aided the rise of African nationalism and the attainment of its goals in Southern Rhodesia.
