Earlier this semester, students in Genocide in Global Comparative Perspective visited the Moccasin Bend Archaeological District to learn more about the Trail of Tears<\/h3>\n\n\n

On March 12, Drs. Michael Samuel and Annie Tracy Samuel accompanied a group of students in Dr. Samuel’s upper-division seminar, “Genocide in Global Comparative Perspective,” on a visit to the Moccasin Bend Archeological District.<\/p>\n\n\n

\"\"<\/a><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n

The group explored part of the famous Trail of Tears which runs through the Archaeological District, and heard a lecture from Park Ranger Chris Young, which detailed the forced removal of the Cherokee from the region. <\/p>\n\n\n

\"\"<\/a><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n

The students were able to engage with the spaces of history, and consider how the landscape and the surrounding area both shaped historical processes, and continue to reflect the legacies of these difficult histories. Among other things, students noted that the trip helped them visualize the forced removal of the Cherokee in a way that the assigned readings alone could not. They also remarked on how incredible it is that such a significant historical episode, and the key site that separated “Indian Country” from territories already conquered by settlers, is hiding in plain sight. They shared how beautiful this hidden trail is, especially as you reach the edge of the bend, where it meets the river.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n
