Their research examines the soundscapes of modern Shanghai and specifically the role that workers&#8217; songs and shouts played in defining the city.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full is-resized\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blog.utc.edu\/app\/uploads\/sites\/76\/2026\/08\/Liu-Image-4.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"600\" height=\"359\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.utc.edu\/app\/uploads\/sites\/76\/2026\/08\/Liu-Image-4.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-3519\" style=\"aspect-ratio:1.6601337797217084;width:780px;height:auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.utc.edu\/app\/uploads\/sites\/76\/2026\/08\/Liu-Image-4.jpg 600w, https:\/\/blog.utc.edu\/app\/uploads\/sites\/76\/2026\/08\/Liu-Image-4-580x347.jpg 580w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>As early as the third century BCE, references to labourers\u2019 work songs appeared in the Chinese court-sponsored compendium <em>Lushi Chunqiu<\/em>, and, for the 2,000 years that followed, labourers throughout China continued to sing these songs. Despite variations in their tones, rhythms, and lyrics, their chanting performed some essential functions: synchronizing movements, communicating information, and boosting morale. During the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, however, the sound of such songs became controversial among newly arrived Anglophone settlers as well as Chinese intellectuals in Shanghai, evoking emotions ranging from frustration, contempt, and desperation to compassion, admiration, and even inspiration. This article historicizes the contested interpretations of Chinese workers\u2019 singing and shouting, exploring how different listeners\u2019 anxieties and agendas shaped what they heard. At the same time, it juxtaposes these reactions with the labourers\u2019 own justifications for the sounds they made, and their responses to the baffling modern cityscape they had to navigate. While reconstructing the histories of marginalized groups has long been hindered by the perception of archival silence, attending to sonic traces often dismissed as \u2018mere noise\u2019 can help to recover the vital sounds of those otherwise rendered voiceless by the historical record.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blog.utc.edu\/app\/uploads\/sites\/76\/2026\/08\/Liu-Image-3.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"598\" height=\"464\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.utc.edu\/app\/uploads\/sites\/76\/2026\/08\/Liu-Image-3.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-3524\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.utc.edu\/app\/uploads\/sites\/76\/2026\/08\/Liu-Image-3.jpg 598w, https:\/\/blog.utc.edu\/app\/uploads\/sites\/76\/2026\/08\/Liu-Image-3-580x450.jpg 580w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 598px) 100vw, 598px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>As Dr. Liu explains:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cUntil the Lion learns to write, every story will glorify the hunter.\u201d Deeply motivated by this African proverb, My research and teaching always stay attuned to the sound of the marginalized groups, people who do not know how to read and write and often left out of written archives. My book manuscript, <strong>That Hideous Noise: Chinese Sounds and the Transnational Making of Modernity in China and the United States, 1830\u20131930<\/strong>, investigates how the sounds of Chinese dockworkers, night watchmen, and professional mourners, as well as Chinese firecrackers and musical instruments, acquired new meanings on both sides of the Pacific Ocean when China transferred from a wobbly empire to a new modern state.
