An “IBM Power of Technology” program, The Genographic Project: Unraveling the mystery of human migration will be held on the UTC campus Wednesday, October 8, 1:30-3 p.m. at the UTC University Center Auditorium.
Presenters include Alex Moen, V.P. of Mission Programs, National Geographic and Jeremy Dies, IBM Program Manager, The Genographic Project.
The Genographic Project is charting new knowledge about the migratory history of the human species by using sophisticated laboratory and computer analysis of DNA contributed by hundreds of thousands of people from around the world over five years. In this unprecedented and real-time research effort, the Genographic Project is closing the gaps of what science knows today about humankind’s ancient migration stories.
Technology plays the critical role in this project. As the technology partner, IBM is providing research assistance and software to collect, store and make sense of the massive amounts of information collected. The resulting public database of anonymous data will house one of the largest collections of human genetic information ever assembled and will serve as an unprecedented resource for geneticists, historians and anthropologists—making this project an ongoing discovery.
