The UTC Women’s Studies Colloquium: Explore, Connect, and Empower Lecture Series will continue on Monday, November 2, 5:30 p.m. in the University Center-Chattanooga Room for the second lecture in the Women’s Studies Colloquium. Mike Jaynes, lecturer in English and Women’s Studies at UTC, will present: “Corporate Pornography: Screwing the World.”
The goal of the talk is to open a pornography discussion on UTC’s campus by discussing various feminist approaches to pornography (hard-core and otherwise), examining the corporate backing of it, and discussing some of the hidden processes involved in creating hard-core pornography.
Jaynes argues pornography is not simply erotica, and porn is not a valid form of empowerment for women. The lecture outlines the often debated financial aspects of the porn industry and the corporations most heavily profiting from it. Many of these corporations do not publicly advertise their heavy profits from hard-core pornography. Porn has driven some of the technological advancements in the past fifty years, and with the advent of internet porn and increasingly common and affordable high speed connections, the issue is different and even more urgent.
The lecture will delve into some of the darker and more disturbing hidden processes and aspects of pornography while Jaynes argues one should never assume watching porn is simply watching adults having good clean fun. He will also engage and respond to some of the pro-porn theories of Wendy McElroy, prominent pro-sex feminist and noted author.
Though no hard-core XXX images will be shown during the lecture, attendees should be aware the presentation includes nude images and words which may be offensive to some.
