The Racing Mocs are on a roll! The team secured another top ten finish at the Society of Engineers (SAE) international competition in Portland, Oregon. The student-led team placed eighth overall, their highest finish ever.

In April, the team placed tenth out of more than 100 teams at the SAE international competition in Auburn, Alabama. The team will compete again in June in Baja SAE International Wisconsin. The Racing Mocs competed and placed well in several other events. The team placed fourth in the endurance race, fourteenth in the hill climb, and eighth in the rock crawl. The team also finished first out of 100 entries in the sales presentation competition. For this event, the team had to pitch the design of their prototype vehicle to judges posing as executives of a hypothetical manufacturing company. The objective of this presentation is for the team to convince the executives to purchase their Baja SAE vehicle design and put it into mass production. “As an advisor of this year’s UTC team, this is by far the best Baja team I have ever been associated with. The cohesiveness and teamwork leading to an excellent performance was incredibly professional. I have no doubt that each student on the team will be a major asset wherever he or she lands after graduation,” Dr. Will Sutton, Dean of the UTC College of Engineering and Computer Science, said. This year’s team members are: Scotty Adams, Jay Baker, Raymond Butts, Kevin Brown, James Fogo, Joshua Griffith, Michael Newman, Rebecca Palmer, Alex Reiners, Rachel Rifenberg, Michael Sherrit, Stephen Snyder, Emily Stark, and Joel Wood. Stark is the club leader. Faculty advisers are Sutton and Karl Fletcher, Manager of Technical Support for the UTC College of Engineering and Computer Science. Dr. Phil Kazemersky, Professor in the UTC College of Engineering and Computer Science, taught the students in the Interdisciplinary Design class.
