Dr. Stephen Berry of the University of Georgia will deliver the lecture “‘If There is a Worse Place Than Hell, I Am in It’: Abraham Lincoln as a War Leader” on Wednesday, November 6, at 6 p.m. at The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga University Center, Signal Mountain Room.

Berry earned his Ph.D. in American History from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 2000, and is a specialist in the history of the Civil War, the American South, southern masculinity, and the Lincoln and Todd families. He currently serves as the Gregory Chair in the Civil War Era and Co-Director of the Center for Virtual History at the University of Georgia.
In addition to nearly a dozen articles, book chapters, and reviews, Berry has authored four books, including House of Abraham: Lincoln & the Todds, a Family Divided by War (Houghton Mifflin, 2007) and the edited collection Weirding the War: Stories from the Civil War’s Ragged Edges (University of Georgia Press, 2011).
He also has received grants and fellowships from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, the Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History, the National Endowment for the Humanities, the Organization of American Historians, and the American Council of Learned Societies.
