Brittany Harris, pictured, and Colleen Ryan created the Passage, a mobile classroom.

Brittany Harris, who earned a bachelor’s degree in education from UTC, has been featured on Steve, the TV talk show hosted by comedian and radio personality Steve Harvey.

Harris was invited to the show to talk about the Passage, a mobile classroom created by her and Colleen Ryan, another graduate of UTC’s School of Education. Harvey called Harris “a great example of how you make a way out of no way in order to help others.”

To help students improve their test scores in math and literacy, Harris and Ryan have turned a small bus into a classroom with desks, chairs, computer laptops, a white board and other educational tools. They offer four weeks of 30-minute sessions for both students and parents, often driving directly to the students’ homes.

On the show, Harris was presented with a $5,000 check to help fund the work of the Passage.

Harris teaches at Barger Academy of Fine Arts and Ryan teaches at Rivermont Elementary School.
