You all are hitting on everything,\u201d O\u2019Brien told the class. \u201cWe\u2019ve had a lot of transformation in public safety over the last 18 months in terms of who our staff is, where our mission is and what I expect of our folks.\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">He discussed the Aug. 21 event on campus, when a hoax call led to a campus lockdown. He explained that UTC Public Safety has worked hard to build stronger connections with local, state and federal agencies so that everyone is ready to respond when needed.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cWhen I came here 18 months ago, I was given a very clear mission,\u201d he said. \u201cThe biggest concern was acts of violence on campus, but behind that are all the everyday safety issues you\u2019re bringing up. It\u2019s my job to make sure we\u2019redoing everything we can to keep everyone safe.\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">A big part of the department\u2019s focus, O\u2019Brien told students, is pedestrian safety. He described a study conducted by UTC\u2019s Center for Urban Informatics and Progress that utilized heat maps to track pedestrian activity and vehicle movement around campus, which helps public safety make improvements.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">He said the department has also focused on increasing visibility of officers around campus.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cWe now have a couple of e-bikes for officers to be on, and we\u2019ve gotten some golf carts so that we can be more present,\u201d he said. \u201cI continue to encourage my officers to get out of the car, walk through campus, walk through your buildings, engage with students \u2026 We are this business of service.\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">O\u2019Brien also shared that UTC has been expanding its network of security cameras, several of which use AI to detect potential threats.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cWe have roughly 900 cameras on campus,\u201d O\u2019Brien said. \u201cSome of those now use AI technology for things like detecting weapons, identifying falls or injuries and flagging unusual activity after hours. It doesn\u2019t replace people, but it helps us stay alert and aware when officers can\u2019t be everywhere at once.\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Holzmacher followed by praising the students\u2019 work.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cI was very impressed,\u201d he said. \u201cYou struck a lot of our hearts. It\u2019s almost like you\u2019ve sat in some long meetings the way you hit on a lot of the key points.\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">He shared that campus police are always one call away, even if a crime is not occurring. He said officers can help students who feel uneasy walking across campus at night by offering a ride or escort.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Fuchs concluded by sharing UTC\u2019s safety app, SafeMocs, which is available on <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/play.google.com\/store\/apps\/details?id=com.cutcom.apparmor.utc&amp;pli=1\"><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">Google Play<\/span><\/b><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> or the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/apps.apple.com\/us\/app\/safe-mocs\/id6449461199\"><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">Apple App Store<\/span><\/b><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Not only does the app contain information on safety plans and campus maps, but it also allows users to share their location and live stream in an emergency.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cAn emergency alert will automatically allow you to let us know what\u2019s going on,\u201d Fuchs explained while he projected the app onto a screen. \u201cYou can tell us what is happening or just send an alert. It\u2019s now going to text us as well as notify our dispatch that there\u2019s something going on.
