You might not realize it, but you probably use geographic information systems (GIS) every day.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Tools like Google Maps, weather radars, and package tracking all <\/span>utilize<\/span> this technology.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cEveryone uses it,\u201d<\/span> said Charlie Mix, GIS director in the Center for Applied Geospatial Data Science (CAGDS) at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga. \u201cEvery single industry uses GIS. There\u2019s an application for it and it\u2019s being used by every Fortune 500 company. It\u2019s used in city planning, it\u2019sused in engineering, in public health. It\u2019s used in business and marketing and so on and so on.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

For those who aren\u2019t familiar <\/span>or proficient<\/span> with GIS, there is an opportunity at UTC to learn. GIS Day, held every year on the third Wednesday of November, will be celebrated by CAGDS with a workshop for the campus community.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The <\/span>GIS Day<\/span> workshop will take place from 9-11 a.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 19, in the Multidisciplinary Research Building <\/span>(701 E. Martin Luther King Blvd.).<\/span> It is free and open to UTC students, faculty, staff and members of the public, but seating and computers are limited. <\/span>Click here to RSVP.<\/span><\/b><\/a>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

This year\u2019s theme focuses on geospatial artificial intelligence (geoAI), the intersection of AI and GIS technology. Participants will be introduced to tools that use deep learning and remote sensing to automate mapping processes.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cMachine learning and AI are really nothing new to GIS,\u201d Mix explained, \u201cbut the past few years have brought major advancements in deep learning, particularly in automating workflows for classifying objects in imagery.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

He said what once took days or even weeks to process can now be completed in a matter of hours once a model is properly trained.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Assistant GIS Director Nyssa Hunt said part of the goal is to teach participants how to use AI responsibly.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cEsri (GIS mapping software) is producing a lot of AI modeling solutions and different packages, and it\u2019s really taking off in a lot of directions,\u201d Hunt said. \u201cIt\u2019s a good time to show people how to use it responsibly and not just however they think they should. We want to provide guidance on workflows and maybe inspire people with research ideas.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Mix said the workshop is open to anyone interested in how GIS can be applied across disciplines.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cAnyone who works with data or information should at least get familiar with GIS,\u201d he said. \u201cEspecially if you work in engineering, the environment, public health or in nonprofits where you\u2019redealing with community prosperity. If your work involves anything to do with geography, then GIS can help you.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

He added that CAGDS projects have already utilized deep learning to support local environment work, such as in urban forestry where geoAI is used to automate mapping Chattanooga\u2019s tree canopy.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Mix encouraged participants to also join a community networking event, the Chattanooga GIS Users Group \u201cMappy Hour,\u201d from 5-7 p.m. at <\/span>Wanderlinger Brewing Company.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cGIS Day is an international celebration of GIS and the people doing GIS to raise <\/span>awareness, and<\/span> for people to showcase their work,\u201d Mix said. \u201cThis stuff has a real impact. It is being used to hopefully make the world a better place.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
