Together, these define what it means to create and share new knowledge.

“You’re discovering something that’s never been done before,” says Bruce, who began her tenure as chancellor on June 30. “You’re broadening the knowledge base of humankind. It could be something very grandiose or something very niche, but if you stop and think about that, it’s extraordinary.”

That three-part model forms the foundation of Bruce’s vision for UTC. A longtime researcher and academic leader who secured more than $20 million in funding for her own research and has overseen more than $100 million in federal and industry funding as a campus leader, she believes research is not just a faculty pursuit: It’s a student experience, a regional asset and a cultural force.

Grantsmanship, she explains, is about securing the resources to fuel that work. Discovery is the process of creating new knowledge. And scholarship is the critical act of sharing it—whether through peer-reviewed journals, conference papers or public engagement—so that others can build on it.

“It really doesn’t help mankind if I go in a lab and make a discovery, and I tell no one,” Bruce says. “The dissemination of knowledge is how progress happens. Someone else reads your work and builds on it, and then someone else builds on theirs. That process—that constant pursuit—is what makes research so impactful.

“And very few people are able to do research that significantly addresses society’s challenges by going into their office and working in isolation. Most really impactful research is multidisciplinary. It requires people from different disciplines working together to help drive innovative solutions.”

<img data-recalc-dims="1" loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="880" height="685" data-attachment-id="73027" data-permalink="https://blog.utc.edu/news/2025/12/ask-observe-connect/spring-research-and-arts-conference-25-111/" data-orig-file="https://i0.wp.com/blog.utc.edu/app/uploads/sites/9/2025/12/Spring-Research-and-Arts-Conference-25-1051-e1764876746563.jpg?fit=1046%2C814&ssl=1" data-orig-size="1046,814" data-comments-opened="0" data-image-title="Spring Research and Arts Conference-25-" data-image-description="" data-image-caption="<p>People attend the Spring Research and Arts Conference Wednesday, Apr. 9, 2025 in the Wolford Family Center.</p>
" data-large-file="https://i0.wp.com/blog.utc.edu/app/uploads/sites/9/2025/12/Spring-Research-and-Arts-Conference-25-1051-e1764876746563.jpg?fit=880%2C685&ssl=1" class="wp-image-73027 size-full" src="https://i0.wp.com/blog.utc.edu/app/uploads/sites/9/2025/12/Spring-Research-and-Arts-Conference-25-1051-e1764876746563.jpg?resize=880%2C685&ssl=1" alt="Keyle Bryant presents a research poster during the 2025 Spring Research and Arts Conference." style="max-width: 100%;"style="max-width: 100%;" srcset="https://i0.wp.com/blog.utc.edu/app/uploads/sites/9/2025/12/Spring-Research-and-Arts-Conference-25-1051-e1764876746563.jpg?w=1046&ssl=1 1046w, https://i0.wp.com/blog.utc.edu/app/uploads/sites/9/2025/12/Spring-Research-and-Arts-Conference-25-1051-e1764876746563.jpg?resize=1024%2C797&ssl=1 1024w, https://i0.wp.com/blog.utc.edu/app/uploads/sites/9/2025/12/Spring-Research-and-Arts-Conference-25-1051-e1764876746563.jpg?resize=768%2C598&ssl=1 768w, https://i0.wp.com/blog.utc.edu/app/uploads/sites/9/2025/12/Spring-Research-and-Arts-Conference-25-1051-e1764876746563.jpg?resize=800%2C623&ssl=1 800w, https://i0.wp.com/blog.utc.edu/app/uploads/sites/9/2025/12/Spring-Research-and-Arts-Conference-25-1051-e1764876746563.jpg?resize=580%2C451&ssl=1 580w, https://i0.wp.com/blog.utc.edu/app/uploads/sites/9/2025/12/Spring-Research-and-Arts-Conference-25-1051-e1764876746563.jpg?resize=610%2C475&ssl=1 610w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 880px) 100vw, 880px" />
Keyle Bryant presents a research poster during the 2025 Spring Research and Arts Conference.

UTC is well-positioned to foster that kind of collaboration, she says.
