Photo by Angela Foster.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>On\u00a0April 14, the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga will join the global celebration of quantum science as part of World Quantum Day 2026, an annual event that promotes awareness and understanding of the field.<\/p>\n<p>UTC Quantum Center Director Rick Mukherjee explained that this is a day to educate interested parties on a budding industry. As a part of the day\u2019s activities, UTC will host a\u00a0STEM Open House for local high school students. <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/blog.utc.edu\/news\/2026\/04\/why-quantum-why-now-and-why-utc\/\" data-outlook-id=\"824f92db-4da0-4db0-bcc3-7c9ced315081\">A UTC Research Institute blog post was also released today<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0to help better understand why quantum technologies matter and how UTC is positioned to lead in this space.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe want Chattanooga and the broader community to know about the quantum activities happening at UTC\u2014both in terms of education and cutting-edge research,\u201d Mukherjee said. \u201cWorld Quantum Day gives us a meaningful opportunity to engage the public and share why this field matters.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>As part of the day\u2019s activities, local high school students will be taken on a tour of the Quantum Center.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cStudents will tour our labs and see how quantum connects across disciplines\u2014from physics and chemistry to mathematics and biology,\u201d Mukherjee said. \u201cFaculty from across the University are involved, highlighting that this work extends well beyond just the Department of Physics and the Quantum Center.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur goal is to spark curiosity\u2014first in science broadly, and then in quantum specifically. We want students to see what\u2019s possible and be excited about the work happening at the UTC Quantum Center.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"entry-content-asset\"><iframe title=\"Quantum at UTC | Building What\u2019s Next\" style=\"max-width: 100%;\"style=\"max-width: 100%;\"src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/yGgYWYcK4KM?rel=0&#038;modestbranding=1&#038;autohide=1&#038;showinfo=0&#038;controls=0\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<p>Students will be greeted by Professor Keenan Dungey, head of the Department of Physics and Astronomy. They will then attend presentations from Department of Mathematics Head Chris Cox and Professor of Computer Science and Engineering Yu Liang.<\/p>\n<p>Later, students will hear about different professional pathways from Dungey, Cox and UC Foundation Professor of Computer Science and Engineering Mengjun Xie.<\/p>\n<p>Mukherjee stressed the importance of having different departments represented on World Quantum Day because quantum technologies will affect many industries and this exposure will help prepare students for the future.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cQuantum will impact\u00a0nearly every industry\u2014health care, finance, logistics, insurance and more\u2013and students need to understand how this technology will shape the future and how to be prepared\u00a0for it,\u201d\u00a0he said. \u201cWe would welcome students to join the physics program and go deep into quantum, but the future of this field also depends on talent from across\u00a0disciplines.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In response to the need for diverse expertise, the University created a Quantum Information Science and Engineering (QISE) certificate and is working on additional support.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cUTC is building pathways at every level\u2014from our existing undergraduate programs to future graduate and Ph.D. programs\u2013so students can engage with quantum regardless of their major,\u201d he said. \u201cOur goal is to make quantum education accessible and relevant across disciplines.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis isn\u2019t limited to students enrolled at UTC. We\u2019re also developing opportunities for working professionals\u2014similar to what we have done with Volkswagen and EPB\u2014to build quantum knowledge and skills. We\u2019re committed to raising quantum literacy and quantum awareness across Chattanooga.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mukherjee cited a McKinsey &amp; Company study that forecasted the quantum sector as a trillion-dollar industry and compared it to the artificial intelligence boom, saying, \u201cWe want to ensure our region is prepared\u00a0to lead, not react, to what\u2019s coming next.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Interim Vice Chancellor for Research Mina Sartipi said World Quantum Day represents more than just a milestone; it represents a bold vision for the UTC campus.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWorld Quantum Day highlight\u2019s\u00a0UTC\u2019s long-term commitment to leadership in this space,\u201d Sartipi said. \u201cThrough strategic early investment, the creation of our center and the recruitment of exceptional faculty, researchers and students across disciplines, we have built a thriving quantum ecosystem.
