Photo by Angela Foster.<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">T<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">he University of Tennessee at Chattanooga will host a nationally competitive summer research program in computational biology after receiving a $464,970 grant from the National Science Foundation.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The three-year Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU) <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">program<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, \u201cInterdisciplinary Computational Biology (iCompBio),\u201d will bring undergraduate students from across the country to campus for research. <\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">The award marks the second renewal of the iCompBio REU site at UTC.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">From May to July, <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">iCompBio<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> will host 10 students from across the country for a total of 30 participants over the life of the grant. Participants will receive a stipend along with housing and travel support.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Students in the iCompBio program will work on faculty-mentored research projects that apply computing to biological questions. Project topics vary each <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">year but<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> will center on using data, modeling and computational tools to better understand complex biological systems. Students will also attend weekly scientific seminars.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The program is led by Associate Professor of Data Analytics Yingfeng Wang in UTC\u2019s College of Engineering and Computer Science and Assistant Professor of Genetics Jannatul Ferdoush in the College of Arts and Sciences.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Wang said the program shows the shift in how biological research is conducted.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cComputational biology is an important area for undergraduate research right now because biological research has become increasingly data-driven and computationally intensive,\u201d <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Wang said.\u201cModern life <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">science questions\u2014from disease mechanisms and epidemic forecasting to biodiversity loss, antibiotic resistance, metabolite discovery and bio-inspired technologies\u2014now require students to integrate biology with data science, machine learning, mathematical modeling, high-performance computing and emerging tools such as generative AI and quantum <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">computing.\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The experience is designed to give students both technical skills and a clearer sense of direction in their field.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cWe hope students leave the program with both technical confidence and a stronger sense of themselves as scientists,\u201d Wang said.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">For UTC, the grant builds on existing strengths in interdisciplinary and undergraduate research.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Dr. <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Mengjun<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> Xie, head of the Department of Computer Science and Engineering, said the University is <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">well-positioned<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> to support the program.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cUTC is a strong place to host an REU site like iCompBio because of its commitment to undergraduate research, interdisciplinary collaboration and applied computer science,\u201d Xie <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">said. \u201cThe program<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> brings together faculty expertise in computer science, biology, data science, machine learning, mathematical modeling and high-performance computing, giving students access to a broad research environment that connects computing with real biological and societal problems.\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">He added that the program aligns with UTC\u2019s research priorities.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cThis grant fits directly into UTC\u2019s broader efforts to expand research in computational science, interdisciplinary computing and high-impact undergraduate education,\u201d he said. \u201cIt also supports UTC\u2019s larger research strategy by strengthening faculty-led research, expanding externally funded opportunities and engaging undergraduate students in meaningful, mentor-guided projects.\u201d<\/span><span
