Photo courtesy of Tiffany Herron.<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Tiffany Herron spent her time at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga consumed by a piece of Chattanooga history that seemed to have largely faded from public memory.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cWhy aren\u2019t more people talking about this?\u201d Herron recalled asking. Even lifelong Chattanoogans she spoke with knew little about it. <\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Her curiosity about a group of women who earned the collective name \u201cthe Chattanooga Five\u201d led her deep into UTC\u2019s resources. She spent hours in the UTC Library, traveled to New York City for research, interviewed attorneys and family members, and pursued a project that led her far beyond the classroom.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The research eventually opened the door to documentary filmmaking. Herron served as a co-producer for \u201cHow to Sue the Klan: The Legacy of the Chattanooga Five,\u201d which earned the category of Outstanding Short Form Documentary at the 40th Midsouth Emmy Awards in February.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">In April, the documentary was nominated for a 47th Annual News and Documentary Emmy Award in the Outstanding Regional Documentary category.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134233117&quot;:false,&quot;134233118&quot;:false,&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335551550&quot;:1,&quot;335551620&quot;:1,&quot;335559685&quot;:0,&quot;335559737&quot;:0,&quot;335559738&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:279}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">********<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Born and adopted in Hawaii, Herron moved with her family several times before landing in Chattanooga in 2002. After completing bachelor\u2019s and master\u2019s degrees in parks and recreation at Clemson University, she enrolled at UTC in 2018 to pursue a master\u2019s degree in<\/span> <span data-contrast=\"auto\">creative writing.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">A tour of downtown arranged by former UTC English Professor James Arnett introduced her to the Chattanooga Five. <\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">On April 18, 1980, three Ku Klux Klan members attacked four Black women\u2014Viola Ellison, Lela Mae Evans, Opal Jackson and Katherine Johnson\u2014in a drive-by shooting on downtown Chattanooga\u2019s MLK Boulevard. <\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;335551550&quot;:1,&quot;335551620&quot;:1}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The gunmen shot four of the women with shotgun pellets. Broken glass injured another woman, Fannie Mae Crumsey, in her home. Though all five survived, they faced a long fight for justice.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;335551550&quot;:1,&quot;335551620&quot;:1}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The location of the shooting was the last stop of the tour and just a block away from UTC\u2019s campus.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cOf course, with me being the oldest student in the class\u2014even older than the tour guide\u2014I was like, \u2018What? 1980? That doesn\u2019t sound right,\u2019\u201d she recalled. \u201cIt sounded like something that would happen in the Jim Crow era.\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The story of the women stuck with her. The other two men in the car were not charged.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Following days of riots, the women filed a federal civil lawsuit with McLaughlin, a New York lawyer. The case marked his first major legal battle and the first time plaintiffs sued the KKK in civil court.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">In 1982, a federal jury found the United Klans of America and several individual Klansmen liable for the attack, awarding the women $535,000 in damages. The judgment helped force the Klan out of Chattanooga and marked a significant civil rights victory.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">To understand the case fully, Herron knew she needed to speak with someone who had been there. She tracked McLaughlin down and interviewed him by phone in the UTC Library.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The content became too much for the magazine\u2019s limited word count and \u201cit just wasn\u2019t fitting.\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">She went in another direction with the project, but the Chattanooga Five burned in her mind. She applied for UTC\u2019s Scholarship, Engagement, the Arts, Research, Creativity and Humanities <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.utc.edu\/research\/undergraduate-research-and-creative-endeavor\/programs-and-funding\/funding\/scholarship-engagement-arts-research-creativity-and-humanities-award\"><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">(SEARCH) Award<\/span><\/b><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u2014a $1,000 grant that supports graduate and undergraduate students pursuing original scholarship.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cI applied and I got the SEARCH grant,\u201d she said. \u201cI went to New York City and I interviewed Mr. McLaughlin.\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Suddenly, Herron found herself staring up at a high-rise in the heart of Manhattan. With rented equipment from the UTC Library, she nervously began the interview.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cMr. McLaughlin is a small man, but his character is huge,\u201d she said. \u201cI\u2019m nervous, so I didn\u2019t hit the record button &#8230; I missed the beginning of the interview.\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The interview, though, went well. On a whim, she invited McLaughlin to Chattanooga.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cHe said, \u2018Absolutely,\u2019 and I\u2019m like, \u2018Great, I\u2019ll set it up,\u2019\u201d she said. \u201cBut I was thinking, \u2018My thousand dollars is gone. I don\u2019t know how I\u2019m going to pay for that.\u2019\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">********<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Back on campus, Herron worked with UTC faculty and staff to turn her research into something the community could experience\u2014a public event at the Bessie Smith Cultural Center on MLK Boulevard featuring McLaughlin.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Carolyn Runyon, the director of Special Collections at UTC, helped Herron create posters and advertise the event. Dr. Susan Eckelmann, the director of Africana Studies at the time, gathered funds.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cI was able to fly Mr. McLaughlin in, get him a hotel and reserve the Bessie Smith &#8230; it was great,\u201d she said. \u201cIt was February of 2020, which is Black History Month.\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Community members packed the venue and students from across campus attended. Among them was a particularly meaningful guest.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cWe were in this hall\u2014standing room only\u2014and the only living survivor, Opal Jackson, comes in with her family.\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Prior to the event, Herron conducted interviews with the victims\u2019 family members, including Connie and Sonya Rollins\u2014Jackson\u2019s daughter and granddaughter. She also met with Crumsey\u2019s granddaughter, Juanita Toney.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">She described her connections with them as \u201cfate stuff.\u201d To her, it felt like she had known them \u201call my life.\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cI\u2019m digging into people\u2019s families who don\u2019t owe me anything,\u201d she said. \u201cFannie MaeCrumsey was a pillar in her community. These stories need to be written down. The only way people are going to hear about them is if Juanita tells you. Photo courtesy of Tiffany Herron.<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Herron soon saw the scope of interest in those stories.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">She had just defended her thesis, which focused on finding her biological family. She graduated during the COVID-19 pandemic, with few plans for what to do next.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Soon after, she received an email from Jon Meacham, a Chattanooga native and Pulitzer Prize-winning historian who authored biographies on Thomas Jefferson, Andrew Jackson and George H.W. Bush.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Meacham had seen coverage of Herron\u2019s research and wanted to learn more about the case. During their conversation, Herron mentioned that she had a paper copy of the civil trial transcript McLaughlin had mailed to her\u2014hundreds of pages she had no practical way to scan on her own. Meacham offered to help, arranging for students at Vanderbilt University to digitize the transcript and return it to her.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The next person to reach out was John Beder\u2014a movie producer and director who recently moved to Chattanooga from Colorado\u2014in search of a story about his new home.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cHe said, \u2018I came across this story and every time I look at something, your name is attached to it,\u2019\u201d she recalled. \u201cBecause I\u2019d been on the radio, the TV for the news and the newspaper\u2014and I put my phone number and email address on everything.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cI wanted people, if they knew these women, any of them, I needed them to contact me so I could maybe hear their side of everything.\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Herron met with Beder at Coolidge Park, where he asked the question that would take the story out of her own hands and put it into someone else\u2019s and would thrust the story of Chattanooga Five into a completely new light: \u201cWell, I think this would make a really cool documentary. What do you think about that?\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cJohn Beder &#8230; I could tell just from talking to him,\u201d she recalled. \u201cEither he\u2019s a really good actor or he\u2019s just a kind person. He\u2019s wanting to do this for the right reasons. That was the first time I was sort of like, \u2018This needs to be given to the right person because I don\u2019t want to exploit people.\u2019\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Herron trusted Beder\u2019s vision. The families of the women, most of whom were looking for ways to share their loved one\u2019s story, trusted the project as well.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">A month after their meeting, Herron received yet another unexpected email. Beder asked her to join the project as an assistant producer. At the time, Herron had already laid much of the groundwork the documentary would need.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cI\u2019m like, \u2018What does an assistant producer do? I don\u2019t know,\u2019\u201d she said with a laugh. \u201cHe said, \u2018Exactly what you\u2019ve been doing. The research, the contacts, helping get locations for interviews.\u2019\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">After adding several more producers, the team hit the ground running with traveling and interviews, but they noticed a gap. The film also won an NAACP Image Award, and PBS aired it as part of the documentary series \u201cReel South.\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cBecause it was on PBS for two months, we were eligible for an Emmy Award,\u201d Herron said. \u201cJohn reminded us that five years ago, we were like, \u2018Wouldn\u2019t it be nice if just a couple of college students saw this film? And now you are qualified for an Emmy.\u2019\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Herron attended the awards ceremony in Nashville alongside her husband and several of the film\u2019s crew members\u2014including Crump, who accepted the award and spoke on behalf of the film.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Herron picked up a trophy for Beder, who couldn\u2019t attend the ceremony. Before shipping it, she had to make a quick stop.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cI went to see Ms. Opal. She\u2019s going blind and she\u2019s 93 now &#8230; She\u2019s holding the trophy and (her family) is taking pictures of her,\u201d she said. \u201cI\u2019m like, \u2018This means a lot. This means a whole lot.\u2019<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cWe let Sonya, then Juanita and the Crumsey family take pictures as well. Photo courtesy of Tiffany Herron.<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Since joining a class tour as a new UTC student, Herron learned a lot about being a thoughtful researcher, a documentary filmmaker and her role in her community.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">She also answered her own question of \u201cWhy?\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cThese women deserve credit. They deserve acknowledgment,\u201d she said. \u201cThe bigger thing was that they experienced death threats.\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Despite the team hiring a private investigator, Herron said several people connected to the case could not be tracked down.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cI\u2019ve never had a death threat,\u201d she said. \u201cI have never been so scared for my life that I am not going to talk about anything. I would like to think that if I was scared, I would talk about it and that I would stand up.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cThat\u2019s not this situation &#8230; I learned quickly that the only reason these family members talked to me was because I was sincere. I had to look at the bigger picture for myself as far as filming in that I feel as though I fell into this situation. UTC\u2019s Special Collections proved a valuable resource during the documentary&#8217;s production.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Runyon remembered Herron coming to her as a student with the \u201cincredible story.\u201d Herron later returned with the other filmmakers to go through film negatives from local newspapers.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cWe scanned a couple of hundred scans of stuff that might be interesting to them that they had chosen,\u201d Runyon said. \u201cWe spent a lot of time just poring over these images that we had, trying to see what they could piece together.\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Runyon beamed over how much she enjoyed watching Herron\u2019s project \u201csnowball\u201d from a research project to an award-winning documentary.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cTiffany is really the embodiment of what we hope as a University\u2014to produce students who are engaged citizens working in their communities,\u201d she said. \u201cWhat Tiffany has done is she has leveraged her degree here at UTC to go on and continue to use some of UTC\u2019s resources that are open to alums and community members.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cWe were thrilled as Special Collections to be able to support that in a small way.\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Herron encouraged students, especially those at UTC, to make use of those resources and to broaden their ideas of what it means to be a researcher.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cYou never know what\u2019s going to happen,\u201d Herron said. \u201cI think that having this experience, being at UTC, expanded my world so much.
