When University of Tennessee at Chattanooga student Lance Nelson <\/span>first<\/span> drove into <\/span>Chattanooga<\/span> from his hometown of Knoxville, Tennessee, he made note of the color-blocked contemporary office building that welcomed him after exiting the interstate.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Now in<\/span> his senior year, Nelson and fellow UTC student Mason McKinnon <\/span>are spending<\/span> their summer inside that same building as interns at Steam Logistics.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The two landed the opportunity after meeting company representatives at a UTC career fair. Nelson, a business administration major in the <\/span>Gary W. Rollins College of Business<\/span> with a concentration in entrepreneurship, works in domestic sales. McKinnon, a communication major with a business administration minor, works in drayage operations.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Before joining their teams, both students completed the same three-week onboarding program as every new full-time employee.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cOnce we get on the floor, we\u2019re just a little bit more flexible,\u201d Nelson said. \u201cI\u2019ve been able to help out some of the other managers who have someone out for a week or have an influx of work.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Nelson spends much of his day coordinating domestic freight, communicating with carriers and customers<\/span>, an<\/span>d researching prospective clients for the sales team.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI really <\/span>do<\/span> like the fast-paced kind of go, go, go,\u201d he said. \u201cEverything\u2019s changing all the time.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Lance Nelson<\/p><\/div>\n

McKinnon, who hails from Clarksville, Tennessee, found himself drawn to a different side of the business.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI like the drayage side more because it was a lot slower burning,\u201d McKinnon said.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

His work consists of tracking incoming shipments, building loads into the company\u2019s system and making sure freight continues moving through the supply chain.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Though they work in different departments, both students said their experience at UTC prepared them to go into <\/span>their internships<\/span> with confidence.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Nelson said the curriculum in the entrepreneurship program provided a foundation in nearly every aspect of business before he arrived at Steam.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWe get accounting, finance, economic, marketing and management classes,\u201d Nelson said. \u201cIt gave me a very strong base for everything we learned during training week.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

McKinnon said classes like principles of marketing and professional sales introduced him to the fundamentals of the business world. The UTC experience also helped prepare him for a professional working world.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI think UTC as a whole is just a very good environment that helped us become our best selves for the future,\u201d McKinnon said.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The environment was one of the reasons McKinnon chose UTC in the first place.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cIt was just the perfect distance from home and it was still <\/span>in-state<\/span>,\u201d he said. \u201cI also took the tour for the first time and I kind of fell in love with the city itself, so I had to come here.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Though Nelson\u2014who graduates next spring\u2014plans to one day own a beachside caf\u00e9, they both hope the internship is only the beginning of their time at Steam.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cHopefully we get to come back here,\u201d said McKinnon, who will graduate in December. \u201cThat\u2019s the game plan.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

They encouraged other students looking for internships to put extra effort into every prospect.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cTailor make every opportunity,\u201d McKinnon said. \u201cWhatever opportunity you see, make sure you have a specific goal for that opportunity. Cover letter, resume, have a game plan set just for that one.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Nelson told students <\/span>not to<\/span> overlook companies they are interested in because they don\u2019t advertise internships.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cReach out,\u201d he said. \u201cEven if you don\u2019t know if a company has internships, reach out just in case because they may not post about it or be public about it, but they do take on a couple and you might just be the lucky one.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Travis Cook, Steam Logistics\u2019 executive vice president of sales, said the internship program is familiar from both sides of the desk.<\/span><\/p>\n

A 2014 graduate of UTC\u2019s <\/span>Gary W.<\/span> Rollins College of Business, Cook said he attended the same kind of career fairs now attended by McKinnon and Nelson. He accepted a position in logistics immediately after graduation and <\/span>has<\/span> spent the last 12 years in the industry.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cUTC is a phenomenal school, especially on the business side,\u201d Cook said. \u201cI had a choice to go to UT Knoxville or UTC. I chose UTC.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

He now helps recruit UTC students like McKinnon and Nelson.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cYou get somebody that\u2019s just about to graduate that\u2019s hungry, that wants to go start something,\u201d he said. \u201cYou get to really work with them and see who they are as people, what\u2019s their work ethic, what\u2019s their ability to be coachable and learn. Hopefully, if they\u2019re a good fit, they can accept their diploma and already have the job lined up, ready to go.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Cook, who is from Chattanooga, said that UTC has only become a stronger community partner for local companies and organizations as it grows.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s definitely put itself on the map,\u201d he said. \u201cYou don\u2019t think Chattanooga without thinking of UTC at this point.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Jeff Wood, president of Steam\u2019s domestic division, said that is one reason the company continues recruiting at UTC.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWe feel like there\u2019s a lot of good talent in this town that go to UTC,\u201d Wood said. \u201cIt\u2019s an opportunity for us to almost reinvest in our people here in this town versus just heading up the street to Knoxville.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Wood, who recently relocated to Chattanooga after helping launch Steam\u2019s Minneapolis office, said the University\u2019s growth mirrors the city\u2019s own evolution.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cUTC is bringing people in from the outside too and not just Chattanooga residents,\u201d he said. \u201cWe\u2019re a people-first company, and we always look at the people and the personalities of the people more so than maybe even the resume. We\u2019ve had success and want to keep having that <\/span>with the<\/span>relationship with the University.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n
