It’s hard to know what to do in a crisis, but these simple tips can help you work toward a fast and safe resolution. Staying calm, being smart and putting your safety first are the keys to protecting yourself from being victimized.

Report any suspicious persons or activities (including solicitors) in or near your residence hall to your residence hall staff or the University Police Department at (423) 425-4357. “Telegraph” all movements (let the robber know your intentions if they tell you to do something or retrieve something) and do not surprise the robber. Anxieties are high during a robbery; attempt to keep calm and escalate or aggravate the situation as little as possible. Do as you are told by the robber, and get them out and on their way as soon as possible.

Your survival is the primary concern, and your actions, whether compliant, passive, or resistant, can play a direct role in how an incident evolves and/or concludes. The foremost factor is to consider your safety and the safety of those around you.

If you have any information regarding this incident, please contact the UTC Police Department at (423) 425-4357.
