Here are some familiar offenders:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul id=\"block-e0a7320b-e263-4075-b67c-0a77457e103b\" class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>\u201cClick Here\u201d<\/strong><br>Seems helpful. Isn\u2019t. Tell people where the link goes instead: <strong>\u201cView the academic calendar.\u201d<\/strong> Bonus: screen reader users will thank you.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>A PDF of a flyer<\/strong><br>Looks great on your office bulletin board. Maybe not so much on a phone or screen reader. If the information belongs on the web, consider making it a webpage instead.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>ALL CAPS HEADINGS<\/strong><br>VERY IMPORTANT LOOKING. NOT NECESSARILY VERY READABLE. Use clear, descriptive headings and let the website handle how they look.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>\u201cWelcome to the Department of\u2026\u201d<\/strong><br>Your visitor already knows where they are. Instead, use that valuable space to tell them what they can <strong>do, find or learn<\/strong> there.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Opening every link in a new window<\/strong><br>You might think you&#8217;re helping visitors keep their place. Instead, you&#8217;re taking control of their browser and potentially confusing them. Let visitors decide when they want a new tab.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>\u201cFor more information\u2026\u201d<\/strong><br>More information about <em>what<\/em>? Links should make sense on their own. Try <strong>\u201cLearn about financial aid options\u201d<\/strong> instead.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Putting everything on the homepage<\/strong><br>If everything is important, nothing is important. Your homepage should help visitors find their next step\u2014not contain every step.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Making something bold, bigger or a different color instead of using a heading<\/strong><br>It may <em>look<\/em> like a heading, but that doesn&#8217;t make it one. Use actual heading styles so the structure of your page works for everyone.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Uploading another copy \u201cjust in case\u201d<\/strong><br>Now there are two versions of the same information\u2014and eventually they&#8217;ll disagree. Whenever possible, maintain one authoritative source and link to it.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Keeping an old page because \u201csomeone might still need it\u201d<\/strong><br>Maybe. But outdated content can be worse than no content at all. If a page no longer serves a clear purpose, update it, archive it or let it retire with dignity.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>\u201cRead More\u201d<\/strong><br>Read more <em>about what<\/em>? When a page has several \u201cRead More\u201d links, they\u2019re especially unhelpful to people navigating by links. Try something descriptive like <strong>\u201cExplore undergraduate research opportunities.\u201d<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Underlining text for emphasis<\/strong><br>On the web, underlined text looks like a link. If it isn\u2019t clickable, visitors may spend a few seconds wondering why it\u2019s broken. Use emphasis styles for emphasis and save underlines for links.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Using a table to make things line up<\/strong><br>Everything is beautifully arranged in rows and columns\u2014until someone views it on a phone or uses a screen reader. Use tables for actual <strong>tabular data<\/strong>, not page layout.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>\u201cSee below\u201d<\/strong><br>Below where? On a phone, \u201cbelow\u201d might be several screens away, and a screen reader user may navigate the page differently. Refer to the <strong>section or heading by name<\/strong> instead.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Putting important information in an image<\/strong><br>That graphic may look fantastic, but search engines, screen readers and people zooming on a phone may have a harder time getting the information from it. Put essential information in actual webpage text.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Using headings because of how they look<\/strong><br>H2 is too big, so you choose H4. Problem solved\u2014visually. Structurally, not so much. Choose headings based on the <strong>organization of the content<\/strong>, not their appearance.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>\u201cComing Soon\u201d<\/strong><br>Coming when? A \u201cComing Soon\u201d page created three years ago isn&#8217;t building much anticipation. Publish when you have useful information to share\u2014or include an actual timeframe.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Putting an email address everywhere<\/strong><br>Sometimes contacting someone really is the next step. But if 50 people are likely to ask the same question, the answer probably belongs on the website first.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Adding \u201cImportant!\u201d to make something important<\/strong><br><strong>IMPORTANT! PLEASE NOTE! ATTENTION!<\/strong> If everything is urgent, visitors quickly learn to ignore all of it. Good placement, clear headings and concise writing do a better job of establishing priority.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Writing for the organizational chart<\/strong><br>Visitors don&#8217;t necessarily know which office, division or committee owns the thing they need. Organize and describe content around <strong>their task<\/strong>, not your internal structure.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Listing every possible audience<\/strong><br>\u201cInformation for students, faculty, staff, parents, alumni, visitors and community members\u2026\u201d Congratulations\u2014you&#8217;ve described almost everyone. Focus instead on what people came to the page to accomplish.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Using \u201cFAQs\u201d to avoid organizing the content<\/strong><br>Sometimes FAQs are useful. Sometimes they&#8217;re just a very long page where every heading is a question. If the information has a natural structure, give it one.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Repeating the same information on several pages<\/strong><br>It feels convenient\u2014until the tuition amount, deadline, phone number or policy changes and someone has to remember everywhere it was copied. <strong>Write it once and link to it.<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Putting the date in an image<\/strong><br>Nothing says \u201cquick update\u201d like finding the original Photoshop file because the event moved from Tuesday to Wednesday. Keep details that may change as editable webpage text.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Using the homepage as a filing cabinet<\/strong><br>That link might be useful to <em>someone<\/em>, but that doesn&#8217;t mean it belongs in the main navigation or on the homepage. Design navigation around <strong>common visitor needs<\/strong>, not requests to \u201cadd our link somewhere.\u201d<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Keeping content because \u201cwe\u2019ve always had it\u201d<\/strong><br>Longevity isn&#8217;t the same thing as usefulness. Every page should have an audience, a purpose and someone responsible for keeping it accurate.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Writing like a university<\/strong><br>\u201cThe Office of Whatever endeavors to facilitate the provision of resources\u2026\u201d You\u2019re allowed to say <strong>\u201cWe can help you find\u2026\u201d<\/strong> Clear, conversational language isn&#8217;t less professional. It&#8217;s more useful.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"block-15a775f9-dfc3-4d64-8886-91930ada8f09\"><strong>Editor Action: Find it. Fix it.<\/strong><br>Open one page you manage and look for at least one of these offenders. Replace that \u201cclick here,\u201d rethink that PDF, fix that heading, remove outdated information or give your introduction a purpose.
