Birds definitely do it. Bees and educated fleas might do it.
I can surely state that data definitely…migrates. In that old song the metaphor referred more to falling in love than moving software and data around, but the concept of migration applies. Software and data don’t fly south for the winter, but they can fly to another location and those in information technology refer to this as a ‘migration.’
In the case of a Content Management System, or in our case, the Drupal migration, we are essentially talking about the process of moving content currently in OUCampus and housed in the OmniUpdate ‘cloud’ to another CMS known as Drupal hosted in the Acquia Cloud. The 6,000+ current webpages need to move from one place to another.
Early next year, we will be working with Acquia and other partners to move our UTC website from OU Campus to Drupal. Once that migration completes and we are fully using Drupal, OU Campus will shut down and new development will take place using Drupal.
As you would prepare for any trip, we are doing the same: packing the suitcases, stopping the mail, arranging the transportation and checking the weather are all activities meant to prepare the traveler. For a CMS migration, we are reviewing all the webpages to make sure they are ready to migrate. We also have preparation to do on the Drupal side to ready it to receive the new content.
The general plan is to refresh the current website and as the Drupal migration progresses, webpages will be migrated from OU Campus to Drupal. Regardless of when the migration actually takes place, the website refresh will run in parallel. The migration technical aspects are being handled in the background while the refresh is more visible at the moment. Stay tuned to this blog for updates and schedules over the coming months. We aren’t planning to fly south for the winter anytime soon…
