Greetings Colleagues:
As we head into one of the busier times of year for the Institutional Review Board, I’m writing to share some new information about best practices in the following areas:
- Research involving students as participants
- Privacy protections
- Use of incentives in research
The new guidance can be found on the Participant Recruitment page on the IRB website. We have also added an Application Tips page that summarizes steps that IRB applicants can take to improve their IRB documents and help speed up the review process.
If you are teaching a research methods course in a discipline that involves research with human participants, I encourage you to arrange for an IRB staff member to visit your class and present information on the application process if this would be helpful. To schedule a visit, please contact us at irb@utc.edu. We offer presentations on IRB Basics and IRB Exempt vs. Expedited Applications, or can tailor a presentation to your course goals and students’ needs. Pre-recorded versions of our core training presentations are available here.
Thank you for your help in ensuring that UTC follows and teaches best practices in the ethical conduct of research.
Regards,
David Deardorff
Director, Institutional Review Board
