Abstract:
The availability of quality information is critical to making informed career decisions. Presently, there is a void of information regarding the level of job demands that impact work-nonwork balance and conflict in various occupations. Although raw data on job demands are available through resources such as O*NET, a source has yet to be established that frames these occupation-specific demands in terms of their influence on the likelihood of experiencing balance or conflict between work and nonwork roles. This study was designed to develop and test a methodology among chefs to assess the likelihood of experiencing work-nonwork balance or work-nonwork conflict based on relevant occupational and personal factors. This methodology utilized self-report measures of job demands to collect occupational data from chefs. This data was then compared to O*NET data from the Chef and Head Cook profile, validating O*NET as a source for work-nonwork conflict and balance likelihoods related to job demands.
