Analytical Chemistry Applications in the Coal Industry
Stephen R. Smith, MS is an engineering consultant with more than 40 years of experience in the use of coal and coke with international recognition of expertise in coal quality, coal preparation, combustion, laboratory analysis, online coal analyzers, bias testing, and weighing and sampling. A Bachelor of Science in Chemistry and a Master of Science in Engineering Management from the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga are the educational foundation for expertise in the coal industry. Experience in fossil-fueled electric power plants for the US Tennessee Valley Authority includes project engineer at Oak Ridge National Lab, coal wash plant startup engineer, senior fuels engineer for 11 fossil plants, and senior analytical chemist at the TVA central lab. Since leaving TVA and forming Coalsmith Consultants, international work has included lab inspections, audits of sampling systems, bias tests of coal sampling systems, invegating slagging and fouling chemistry, carbon capture, sequestration, and accounting, and providing analyses, statistics, and information for executive decisions.
