The following UTC Faculty and Staff have attracted $22,407 in external grant and contract awards:
Dr. Khalid Tantawi (Mechanical Engineering), in collaboration with Motlow State Community College, has received $4,907 from the National Science Foundation for the project entitled, “Preparing the Workforce for Industry 4.0’s Intelligent Industrial Robotics.”
Dr. Deborah McAllister (School of Education) has received $17,500 from the Georgia Tech Research Institute for the project entitled, “Inspiring NASA’s Next Generation through Building, Coding, and Machine Learning Missions.”

Dr. Hong Qin (Computer Science and Engineering) has requested $702,436 from the OpenAI for the project entitled, “AI alignment challenge using a toy test-bed: emulating the mal-aligned AI model with poisoned attacked AI models.”
Dr. Hong Qin (Computer Science and Engineering), in collaboration with The University of Rhode Island, has requested $9,659 from the National Institute of Health for the project entitled, “Uncovering the Functional Mechanism of Chemokine Receptor CXCR4.”
Dr. Bradley Harris and Dr. Sungwoo Yang (Civil & Chemical Engineering) have requested $20,895 from the Metasorbex Corporation for the project entitled, “AI-powered nanocarbon catalytic process for direct conversion of CO2 to methanol.”
Dr. Serkan Varol (Engineering Management and Technology) has requested $10,962 from the Volkswagen Group of America for the project entitled, “Engineering & Planning Center at VW- Engineering Management and Technology at UTC.”
Dr. Yunye Shi (Mechanical Engineering) has requested $70,000 from the American Chemical Society for the project entitled, “Experimental Investigation of Light-controlled Active Droplets in Confined Environment.”
Dr. Lakmali Weerasena (Mathematics), Dr. Jennifer Boyd (Biology, Geology and Environmental Science) Dr. Damitha Bandara (Management) and Nyssa Hunt (IGTLab) have requested $571,988 from the National Science Foundation for the project entitled, “Innovative Set Covering Models for Effective Conservation Strategies Involving Habitat Connectivity: Optimization Approaches with Emphasis on New Scientific Computing Methods.”
Dr. Priscilla Simms-Roberson, Dr. Susan Thul and Dr. Natalie Owsley (School of Nursing) have requested $1,500,000 from the Health Resources and Services Administration for the project entitled, “TN And GA Network for SANE Preparation & Practice.”
Dr. Kimberly Wingate (School of Education) has requested $54,960 from the Tennessee Department of Education for the project entitled, “Occupational Educator Scholarships 2024-2027.”
Dr. Allen Pratt (School of Education) has requested $615,219, in collaboration with Texas A and M University, from the Institute of Education Science for the project entitled, “Literacy Education and Advancement Rural Network (LEARN) Center.”
