- Get certified if you don’t already have a lifeguard certification (with successful completion of the following prerequisites):
Prerequisite 1: Swim-Tread-Swim Sequence (No resting)
- Jump into the water, submerge, then swim 150 yards using the front crawl, breaststroke, or a mix (goggles allowed).
- Tread water using only your legs for 2 minutes while staying at the surface.
- Swim 50 yards with the front crawl or breaststroke (no back or side strokes).
Prerequisite 2: Timed Event (1 minute, 40 seconds)
- Swim 20 yards from the water’s edge (goggles not allowed).
- Surface dive to retrieve a 10-pound object from 7-10 feet deep.
- Swim 20 yards back with the object while keeping your face above water.
- Exit the pool without using a ladder or steps.
To apply, successful candidates must:
- Have an American Red Cross lifeguard certification (or be willing to obtain one)
- Be currently enrolled at UTC (or we can hire outside of the student body during Summer months – MUST be at least 16 years old)
- Have a strong sense of responsibility and a passion for safety.
