A computational approach to mechanochemistry for the development of functional materials
Allison Roessler, PhD
Assistant Professor of Chemistry
Oglethorpe University
Atlanta, GA
Functional materials represent a fast-growing set of advanced materials, some properties of which are responsive to various stimuli, like transitions lenses which darken in the presence of bright light. Of particular interest are materials that respond to the presence of force. Applications of these technologies vary widely from packaging and construction to targeted drug delivery systems for cancer patients. This area of chemistry also holds promise as a mechanistic tool kit since mechanochemical reactions often yield different products than the expected thermal product. This talk will highlight the work that undergraduate students have completed in my laboratory while working to understand various mechanochemical phenomena.
