Abstract:
Storm sewer infrastructure is stressed due to increased development, aging assets and changing weather conditions. Analyzing and evaluating these systems is critical for operation and maintenance, planning, and flood control programs. This research takes a systematic approach to infrastructure optimization through advanced modelling and real time control (RTC) scenario to provide data driven foundation to make design and operation decisions that maximize infrastructure performance. Warner Park, Chattanooga TN, a combined sewer area with stormwater and wastewater collected in same sewer system, is used as a demonstration site. Personal Computer Storm Water Management Model (PCSWMM) combined with onsite storm sewer flow data and precipitation data was employed to analyze the hydrological and hydraulic conditions of the study area. Pyswmm was implemented to simulate real time controls in the PCSWMM model. Benefits in terms of average volume stormwater volume reduction to combined sewer and potential for additional drainage runoff control at the site with the use of RTC is demonstrated.
