We are off to the start of another great year at UTC. Our campus is alive with activity and this year promises to bring exciting new developments. This is the first of a regular series of e-mails that will come out the first and third Thursday of every month during the school year.
I hope you will come out this weekend and cheer on our football Mocs as they open their home season at Finley Stadium this Saturday, September 6, with kickoff at 6 p.m. Students, we have arranged for free parking and there is also a free campus shuttle to the game- it starts at 5 pm – pickup from the Stacy Town Center and Johnson Obear Apartments and runs continuously until one hour after the game. So come on out to the game!
Both the campus and the community are looking ahead to the opening of our beautiful new library. We anticipate moving into the building at the end of the fall semester and students will begin using the library in January 2015.
The facility is designed with the needs of today’s students in mind, offering a 24-hour study space, a Starbucks coffee shop, and open spaces surrounded by plenty of windows for natural lighting. With more than 150,000 square feet, the new building will include state-of-the-art computer labs and presentation studios, as well as 38 study rooms and 7 classrooms. We have taken special steps during construction in an attempt to qualify the building for LEED Certification, another demonstration of our campus commitment to sustainability.
An important element of our success is our strong connection with our surrounding region. Our future as a campus is integrally tied to the future of our community. We are in the process of hiring a Director of Community Partnerships to help us strengthen these relationships and build new ones.
We are proud to be Chattanooga’s University, and we are committed to being active participants in our community. To help students enjoy our city, our Mocs Express shuttle now runs an extended route, connecting campus to downtown Chattanooga. Students can ride the shuttle to shop, eat, work, or have fun enjoying everything Chattanooga has to offer.
Our community is brimming with entrepreneurial excitement and innovation, and our University is proud to be engaged and involved.
We look forward to a year full of achievements.
