A new white paper from the CRER looks at the origins and destinations of Chattanooga’s domestic migrants. Recent data from the Census Bureau shows that Chattanooga’s population grew at twice the national rate because of domestic migration, but is unable to say where the in-migrants came from. This research, by CRER director and chief economist Howard Wall, shows that nearly half of all in-migrants came from California or elsewhere in Tennessee, and that net migration was dominated by California and Illinois, which accounted for more than half of the net migration into the Chattanooga MSA.
