CRER Chief Economist and Director Howard Wall appeared on News Channel 9 to give his two cents on a proposal to eliminate the 4 percent grocery tax levied by the state of Tennessee. His argument was that the state has a fairly efficient tax system with a broad tax base that allows it to have lower tax rates. Exempting groceries would just mean raising tax rates elsewhere, which would likely make revenue collection less efficient. He also said that it is generally not a good idea to manipulate the tax system to address a crisis du jour like inflation.
