CyberCorps – Scholarships for Service
The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga
CyberCorps®: Scholarship for Service (SFS) is a unique program designed to increase and strengthen the cadre of information assurance professionals that protect the government’s critical information infrastructure.
CyberCorps® scholars will complete either a bachelor’s degree in computing, a master’s degree in computing, or a PhD in Computer Science, and receive support for two or three years, depending on their pathway.
ELIGIBILITY
- United States citizen or permanent resident
- Currently enrolled at UTC with concentration or focus in cybersecurity
- Have at least a 3.3 undergraduate GPA, and/or a 3.5 graduate GPA
- Meet selection criteria for federal employment, including obtaining a security clearance
BENEFITS
- Full tuition and academic fees for up to three years
- Annual stipend of $22,500 for undergraduate students or $34,000 for graduate students
- Annual textbook allowance of $2,000
- Annual health insurance and professional development allowances.
- Paid summer internship at a local/state/federal agency between the scholar’s first and second year in the program (The scholars are responsible to apply for and obtain a position. UTC SFS mentors will provide assistance.)
OBLIGATIONS
- Be a full-time student
- Maintain a minimum 3.3 GPA (undergraduate)/3.75 GPA (graduate)
- Participate in all UTC CyberCorps® program activities
- Conduct research under the guidance of a faculty mentor assigned by the SFS Principal Investigator.
- Participate in the UTC Cyber Competition team and compete in at least one security competition, such as SECCDC and National Cyber League.
- Undergo at least one professional certificate training
- Serve in a leadership position in UTC CyberSecurity organization, or NSBE, IEEE, ACM student chapter, or ACM Middle-SE.
- Complete the degree/program requirements successfully
- Attend at least 2 conferences related to education/research/professional development.
- Attend the SFS Job Fair, WiCyS Career Fair, and Virtual Job Fair
- Participate in a summer internship with a local/state/federal agency
- Work for a federal executive agency (such as Oak Ridge National Lab or TVA) in qualifying positions, upon completing academic degree requirements. Length of service depends on length of scholarship support—one year of service for one year of support.
- Must obtain approvals from UTC SFS Principal Investigator before accepting research projects on campus, internships or submitting job approval requests to the United States Office of Personnel Management (OPM).
Application Materials: (1) A 500-word essay describing your interests in cybersecurity and career aspirations. (2) Current resume. (3) Academic transcript. (4) Three letters of recommendations with at least two letters from faculty that can evaluate your ability to pursue a graduate degree in cybersecurity, professionalism, motivation, expertise in cybersecurity, commitment to federal government jobs, trustworthy, oral and written communication skills. Applicants will be expected to complete and pass background checks and obtain security clearance for expected qualifying jobs.
