A University of Tennessee at Chattanooga lecturer, Morgan Smith, is leading students in an underwater archaeology project on the Tennessee River, using sonar to search for remnants of steamboats and Civil War–era wrecks. In April 2021, the class located what may be the U.S.S. Chattanooga, a ship that broke a Confederate blockade in 1863.
