Please look for the gold shield with the exclamation mark on it in the bottom right corner of your desktop. Click on it and then click on “Install”. When the update is complete, you will need to restart your workstation. If you don’t see the shield, please go to the update link below. If you have any questions, please contact Stephen (5521).
From Mike Ward:
A flaw within Microsoft Windows (NT, 2000, XP, 2003, and Vista) is being actively exploited in both SPAM and on certain websites to infect PCs. Infection can occur by viewing a malicious web site or viewing an specially crafted HTML-email and using Firefox does not provide any implicit protection. Microsoft has released an “out of cycle” patch to fix this problem, and all Windows users are strongly encouraged to visit:
http://update.microsoft.com/microsoftupdate
using Internet Explorer to make sure their PCs are patched. Users should also make sure their anti-virus is up to date. For UTC faculty and staff PCs, double clicking on the “little gold shield”
within the system tray should bring up a window that contains the date of the virus signatures installed on that PC. If this date is more than a week old, please call the HelpDesk at 4000. Please make sure your home PCs are fully patched and protected by an updated anti- virus program. Details about the animated cursor vulnerability can be found at:
