We are in the process of replacing some of our public desktop computers in order to test our new virtual desktop clients. The new “thin” clients are being placed in the stands under the old monitors. There are some nice changes that come with the installation of the new machines, such as having access to Adobe software from all of the workstations and print jobs showing up under users’ UTC IDs at the print stations. There are some other things to keep in mind as library users become accustomed to the new machines. The clients are set to timeout at 15 minutes, not 10. They do not have optical drives for those who wish to view DVDs. And for the evening people, there are currently no popup warnings regarding closing times, and the machines do not automatically shut themselves down at night. We are currently looking into a solution for the popup warnings and hope to have that functionality available soon. Aside from the aforementioned changes, things should be business as usual. A couple of students have already mentioned that they like the new machines. We may also have suggestions come in during the roll out. A form has been placed at the Reference Desk to document any likes or dislikes reported by students regarding the new virtual desktops. The documentation will helpful during this evaluation period. Thanks.
