With our zombie game out to pasture, Reference and Instruction has a new activity for USTU students that goes live today. Here are the assignment details:
1. Students receive a librarian visit and a worksheet with their assignment details (example at Ref Desk)
2. Students view a playlist of videos on our YouTube channel (youtube.com/utclib; no more iPod). It’s a mystery/paranormal theme where they are given clues to find a book
3. Students come to the library with their clues to find the mystery book
4. Once successful, students come to the Ref Desk with the title of the mystery book written on their sheet — we fill out, sign, and give them a certificate that they take to class for credit (copies available at the desk; file available on S:LibraryUSTU iPod ToursFall 2013 and on the Ref PCs’ desktops).
The answer is a mocked-up book called Scrappy Hollow in the reference collection. Students’ clues make up the call number REF BF1450 .C45 L66 2010. It’s very possible that students may not “get it” and show up at the desk for help — a great opportunity to say hello and explain how things are organized at the library. If you notice a lot of clueless students, please let Virginia or Bo know.
