We will kick off Lupton Library’s participation in the 2014 Heart Walk with a group walk tomorrow @ 11:30 AM. If you want to take a walk with us, meet at the circulation desk a few minutes prior to 11:30. We will set out on a 30 minute walk, with options given for 10 and 20 minute walks. It’s as simple as putting one foot in front of the other. We hope you will join us!
Frequent Walker Cards will be placed in your mailbox, and a stack will be available in the Admin office. This is an honor system. Place a check mark on the card for every 10, 20, or 30 minute walk you take. At the end of September and October we will have prizes for the most minutes walked. Walking doesn’t have to occur at work 🙂
Watch for some up-coming lunch and learn opportunities. We will hopefully be scheduling something in September and October.
If you haven’t registered for the Heart Walk yet, you can do so here: www.chattanoogaheartwalk.org Also, think about asking your spouse or friends to join our team. Although our goal is participation, raising a bit of money would be great as well.
Finally, we will be posting heart facts and informational items throughout this campaign. Here’s a taste of the kinds of information we’ll be featuring.
In the United States, someone has a heart attack every 34 seconds. Each minute, someone in the United States dies from a heart disease-related event.
Research has shown that the benefits of walking and moderate physical activity for at least 30 minutes a day can help you:
- Reduce the risk of coronary heart disease
- Improve blood pressure and blood sugar levels
- Improve blood lipid profile
- Maintain body weight and lower the risk of obesity
- Enhance mental well being
- Reduce the risk of osteoporosis
- Reduce the risk of breast and colon cancer
- Reduce the risk of non-insulin dependent (type 2) diabetes
Take the next step to a healthier heart by joining us tomorrow at 11:30.
