A few observations were reported today around printing in the Commons:
- Which printer queue is the default is inconsistent per desktop.
- When using an O365 software for the first time, it takes upwards of 20ish seconds for the printers to be “found”.
We have a fix for the first issue & will attempt to fix on all Commons desktops tomorrow. When we are done, every desktop should default to “Student_BW”. Right now we are seeing a mix of “Guest_BW” and “Student_Color”.
With testing – the only time a student will be charged color prices is if they happen to print a b&w document using the “Student_Color” queue and also go to the color printer. Otherwise, a student who prints as “Student_Color” and goes to the b&w printer will only be charged b&w prices. Similarly, a student who prints using the “Student_BW” queue will only be charged b&w prices at the color printer.
We have a theory for the second issue, but no immediate resolution and will need to dig in more. So if a student reports seeing “Finding available printers…” in an Office document, it’s just a matter of waiting. This was not something we experienced last week in testing.
