The following UTC Faculty and Staff have attracted $598,320 in external grant and contract awards:
Will Davis (WUTC) has requested and received $38,000 from StoryCorps for the project entitled, “One Small Step.”
Dr. Belinda Lee (Center for Community Career Education) has requested and received $359,824 from the U.S. Department of Education for the project entitled, “University of Tennessee at Chattanooga Upward Bound Program.”
Charles Mix (IGTLab) has requested and received $10,043 from the Access Fund for the project entitled, “Geodatabase Development & Spatial Analysis of Rock Climbing Areas in Tennessee for Climbing Conservation.”
Dr. Anthony Skjellum (SimCenter) has requested and received $74,453 from the National Science Foundation for the project entitled, “Real-time Strategies and Synchronized Time Distribution Mechanisms for Enhanced Exascale Performance-Portability and Predictability.”
Dr. Khalid Tantawi (Engineering Management and Technology) in collaboration with Motlow State Community College has requested and received $16,000 from the National Science Foundation for the project entitled, “Smart Manufacturing for America’s Revolutionizing Technological Transformation (SMARTT).”
Dr. Sungwoo Yang (Civil and Chemical Engineering), Dr. Seong Dae Kim (Engineering Management and Technology), and Dr. Thomas Lyons (Excellence in Entrepreneurship) have requested and received $100,000 from the State of California’s Orange County Sustainability Decathlon for the project entitled, “Building an Affordable Zero-Energy Moc House.”

Dr. Jejal Reddy Bathi and Dr. Ignatius Fomunung (Civil and Chemical Engineering), Dr. Stephanie DeVries (Biology, Geology, and Environmental Science), and Dr. Kidambi Sreenivas (Mechanical Engineering) have requested $49,899 from the National Science Foundation for the project entitled, “University-Led Transformation of Municipalities and Civic Engagement for Climate Change Adaptation and Resiliency (ULTIMATE CLIMATE CARE).”
Dr. Kevin Doyle (Counseling) has requested $4,500 from the Association for Assessment and Research in Counseling for the project entitled, “Understanding Clients’ Experiences in Counseling: The Client Meaningful Experiences Scale.”
Dr. Ignatius Fomunung (Civil and Chemical Engineering) and Dr. Trevor Elliott (Mechanical Engineering) have requested $19,964 from TPT Technologies, Inc. for the project entitled, “Demonstration, Testing and Refinement of a sustainable, nonstop, autonomous, affordable(accessible), personalized (SNAAP) transportation system.”
Dr. Dawn Ford and Emma Sampson (Health & Human Performance) have requested $35,698 from the City of Chattanooga for the project entitled, “UTC MPH Program Support of City of Chattanooga’s CARE Coalition.”
Dr. Lani Gao (Mathematics) has requested $59,669 from TeleSpecialists for the project entitled, “Graduate Assistantship Via Data Analysis Sponsored by TeleSpecialists, LLC.”
Dr. Hamdy Ibrahim (Mechanical Engineering) has requested $759,264 from the Department of Defense for the project entitled, “Bioactive magnesium implants with controlled degradation and biocompatibility for orthopaedic applications.”
Dr. Erkan Kaplanoglu, Dr. Ahad Nasab, and Dr. Khalid Tantawi (Engineering Management and Technology) in collaboration with Columbia State Community College have requested $14,015 from the Tennessee Board of Regents for the project entitled, “Simulation-Based Robotics/Mechatronics Training and Competition for Students.”
Charles Mix (IGTLab) has requested $7,250 from the Tennessee Aquarium for the project entitled, “Piney River Watershed Based (WBP) Management Plan, Geographic Information Systems Support.”
Dr. Daniel Pack, Dr. Abdelrahman Karrar (Electrical Engineering), Dr. Farah Kandah (Computer Science and Engineering), and Dr. Stephanie Philipp (School of Education) have requested $4,999,999 from the National Science Foundation for the project entitled, “ExpandQISE: Track 2: Southeast Quantum Network Coalition for Education & Research (SEQNCER).”
Dr. Eleni Panagiotou (Mathematics) has requested $25,000 from Frakktal Labs, LLC for the project entitled, “Development of a Machine Learning Model for the Prediction of Mechanical Attributes in Discarded Biopolymer Streams for Rapid Chemical Development.”
Dr. Brooke Persons (Social, Cultural, & Justice Studies) has requested $16,091 from the Alpine Group USVI, LLC for the project entitled, “Phase I Archaeological Survey and Structural Documentation of Approximately 2.5 Acres in Estate Thomas, St. Thomas, US Virgin Islands.”
Dr. Brooke Persons and Dr. Morgan Smith (Social, Cultural, & Justice Studies) have requested $61,593 from the Reflection Riding Arboretum and Nature Center for the project entitled, “Phase I Archaeological Survey and Archaeological Overview of Reflection Riding Arboretum & Nature Center (Approximately 300 acres) in Lookout Valley in Hamilton County, Tennessee.”
Dr. Brooke Persons (Social, Cultural & Justice Studies) has requested $133,146 from the Virgin Islands Water and Power Authority for the project entitled, “Revised Cruz Bay Cemetery Mitigation and Monitoring.”
Dr. Mina Sartipi (CUIP), in collaboration with UT Knoxville, has requested $26,846 from the National Science Foundation for the project entitled, “Smart Stormwater Infrastructure for Climate Change Resilience.”
Dr. Mina Sartipi (CUIP) and Dr. Chandra Ward (Sociology) in collaboration with Vanderbilt University have requested $438,101 from the National Science Foundation for the project entitled, “Cooperative and Community-Driven Incident Response for Smart and Connected Communities.”
Dr. Khalid Tantawi, Dr. Ahad Nasab, and Dr. Erkan Kaplanoglu (Engineering Management and Technology) in collaboration with Cleveland State Community College have requested $24,651 from the Tennessee Board of Regents for the project entitled, “SERS through a Unified Mechatronics Certification Examination.”
Dr. Yingfeng Wang and Dr. Yu Liang (Computer Science and Engineering) have submitted a preliminary proposal to the Office of Science for the project entitled, “Improve Graph Autoencoder Training by Explaining and Measuring Overfitting Based on Sensitivity Analysis.”
Dr. Mengjun Xie (Computer Science and Engineering) and John Freeze (Center for Professional Education) in collaboration with Purdue University Northwest have requested $470,672 from the U.S. Department of Labor for the project entitled, “Establish a National Registered Apprentice Hub for Cybersecurity Workforce Development.”
