Abstract:
Microplastics (MPs), or plastic particles less than 5 mm in size, are becoming a global concern as an environmental pollutant. As the occurrence of MPs continues to increase, it is important to control in the environment. Therefore, this research investigated two agricultural by products, raw coconut husk (RCH) and its biochar (CHB) and chestnut shell biochar (CSB), as a MPs treatment media using batch and column experiments. RCH showed removal rate of more than 70% of MPs in aquatic sample, while biochar media showing the removal rates of more than 90%. Morphological structures and the electrostatic properties of media as well properties of MPs are expected to be influencing the treatment potential. Overall, based on the research findings, agricultural by products has a potential to treat MPs in from water environmental media.
