Occupational calling intensity (OCI) is a person’s transcendent and all-consuming desire to have a significant positive impact through their employment. Those high in OCI tend to report high engagement in their work, referred to as occupational engagement (OE). However, those with high OCI may also experience significant difficulty disengaging from their work, thus draining them of their resources. As a result, this population may report high levels of OE while simultaneously having a high need for resource recovery (NFRR). This also suggests that OE mediates the relationship between OCI and NFRR. A person may also experience a strong calling that manifests outside of employment, such as in a parental or community role, known as personal calling intensity (PCI). Existing research has yet to examine whether PCI exhibits the same relationships with pertinent positive and negative work outcomes as OCI. Further, it has not been assessed whether those high in PCI may also report simultaneous high levels of personal engagement (PE) and NFRR, or whether PE mediates the relationship between PCI and NFRR. The proposed study is designed to test the relationships between different types of calling intensities (OCI and PCI), different types of engagement (OE and PE), and the need for resource recovery (NFRR).
