The following UTC Faculty and Staff have attracted $341,932 in external grant and contract awards:
Dr. Anna Kiel (Occupational Therapy) and Dr. June Hanks (Physical Therapy) have received $5,000 from the Alliance of Women Philanthropists for the project entitled, “BrainBridge: Exploring Brain Health Across Lifespan and Recovery.”
Dr. Amy Brock-Hon and Kevin Hon (Biology, Geology and Environmental Science) and Steven Kline (Chemistry and Physics) have received $7,690 from the Alliance of Women Philanthropists for the project entitled, “Hands-On Educational Displays at the Clarence T. Jones Observatory: Sparking Curiosity and Enhancing Astronomy Education in the Chattanooga Community.”
Dr. Azad Hossain (Biology, Geology and Environmental Science) has received $147,389 from the National Aeronautics and Space Administration for year 2 of the project entitled, “Remote Sensing of Water Quality in the Tennessee River.”
Dr. Mengjun Xie, Dr. Li Dai, Dr. Yu Liang, Dr. Yingfeng Wang, and Dr. Yukun Yuan (Engineering and Computer Science) have received $47,000 from Northeastern University for the project entitled, “2025 Bridge to Cyber.”
Dr. Amir Alakaam (Health & Human Performance) has received $125,000 from the Tennessee Department of Health for the project entitled, “Developing a Curriculum for Public Health Workforces in Tennessee.”
Dr. Donald Reising (Electrical Engineering) has received $9,853 from Tennessee Technological University for the project entitled, “TREN: Building Tennessee Research and Education Network.”

Dr. Joey Shaw (Biology, Geology and Environmental Science) has requested $12,000 from the Association of Southeastern Biologist for the project entitled, “2025 Spring Wildflower Pilgrimage.”
Dr. Luis Sanchez Diaz (Chemistry and Physics) has requested $1,066,900 from the Department of Defense for the project entitled, “DURIP: Correlative Optical Tweezers and Confocal Fluoresence to Measure Biomechanics and Rheological Properties of Antibiotic-Resistant Escherichia Coli.”
Dr. Mengjun Xie (National Center of Academic Excellence in Cyber Defense) has requested $95,424 from the National Security Agency Central Security Service for the project entitled, “2025 DOD SEC NSA Cybersecurity Scholarships and Outreach.”
Angela Dittmar (Arts-Based Collaborative) has requested $5,000 from the Dollar General Literacy Foundation for the project entitled, “ABC, 123, Arts and Me! Classroom Residencies Boost Reading Skills.”
Dr. Marissa McElrone and Dr. Kara Hamilton (Health & Human Performance) have requested $449,040 from the Tennessee Department of Health for the project entitled, “Strengthening Nutrition Security: Building Capacity to Implement Policy, Systems, and Environmental (PSE) Strategies to Increase Access to Healthy Food and Beverage among Tennessee Food Pantries.”
Charles Mix and Nyssa Hunt (IGTLab) have requested $419,167 from the Thrive Regional Partnership for the project entitled, “Regional Geospatial Data Hub for the Chattanooga, Tennessee Region.”
Dr. Yu Liang, Dr. Yingfeng Wang, Dr. Zihao Wang, Dr. Dalei Wu (Computer Science and Engineering), and Dr. Gregory Heath (Health & Human Performance) have requested $150,000 from the National Science Foundation for the project entitled, “SCC-DG: AI-Enhanced Music Therapy: A Holistic Framework for Neurological Rehabilitation.”
Dr. Ryan Zwart (Health & Human Performance) has requested $150,000 from the National Science Foundation for the project entitled, “SCC-DG: Enhancing Outdoor Recreation Participant Health: Investigating Decision-Making Based on Environmental Quality Understanding.”
Dr. Yukun Yuan, Dr. Jejal Reddy Bathi, Dr. Yu Liang (Engineering and Computer Science), Dawn Ford (Biology, Geology and Environmental Science), Dr. Junrong Shi (Social Work), and Cindy Hornsby (Health, Education, and Professional Studies) have requested $150,000 from the National Science Foundation for the project entitled, “SCC-DG: Community-Driven Indoor Air Quality Management for School-age Children through Sensing, Analysis, Specification, and Intervention.”
Dr. Yukun Yuan, Dr. Shaogang Ren (Computer Science and Engineering), Dr. Max Teaford, and Dr. Feng Guo (Psychology) in collaboration with the University of Texas at Arlington and Florida State University, have requested $289,155 from the National Science Foundation for the project entitled, ” Advancing Safety in Intelligent Transportation Systems: Human Behavior-Aware Simulation, Prediction, and Prevention.”
Dr. Luis Sanchez Diaz (Chemistry and Physics) has requested $250,000 from the National Science Foundation for the project entitled, “LEAPS-MPS: Dynamic Properties and Aging Process of Charged Colloidal System Under Flow Using Rheo-Microscopy and Computer Simulation.”
Dr. Xiunan Wang (Mathematics) has requested $249,993 from the National Science Foundation for the project entitled, “LEAPS-MPS: Refining Inverse Methods and Advancing Hybrid Forecasting Approaches for Influenza Transmission Dynamics.”
Dr. Mina Sartipi, Austin Harris, and Huu Hoang Nguyen (UTC Research Institute/CUIP) have requested $1,444,952 from the National Science Foundation for the project entitled, “S&CC-IRG: AI-Platform for Multi-Sensor Analytics and Safety-Guided Urban Design.”
