The following UTC Faculty and Staff have attracted $964,257 in external grant and contract awards:
Dr. Khalid Tantawi (Engineering Management and Technology) and Dr. Francesca Leasi (Biology, Geology and Environmental Science), in collaboration with Motlow State Community College and Chattanooga State Community College, have received $150,000 from the National Science Foundation for the project entitled, “Development of an Electric Vehicle Engineering Technology Program for the Middle Tennessee Region.”
Dr. Lani Gao (Mathematics) has received $110,000 from Tele-Specialists for the project entitled, “Statistical Analysis in Stroke Care & Treatment.”
Dr. Christina Policastro and Dr. Karen Mcguffee (Social, Cultural & Justice Studies) have received $42,655 from the Tennessee Coalition to End Domestic and Sexual Violence for the project entitled, “2025 Senator Tommy Burks Victims Assistance Academy.”
Dr. Mina Sartipi (CUIP/UTC Research Institute) has received $490,000 from the Tennessee Department of Economic and Community Development for the project entitled, “Advancing High Powered Dynamic Wireless Charging for Medium and Heavy-Duty Vehicles.”
Dr. Amir Alakaam (Health & Human Performance) has received $36,839 from the Tennessee Department of Health for the project entitled, “Developing a Curriculum for Public Health Workforces in Tennessee.”
Dr. David Aborn (Biology, Geology and Environmental Science) has received $1,600 from the Tennessee Ornithological Society for the project entitled, “Survey of Age and Sex Ratios in Chimney Swift (Chaetura pelagica) Roosts in the Southeastern US.”
Dr. Ethan Carver (Assistant Provost for Research), Dr. Michelle Deardorff (Political Science and Public Service), and Dr. Joanne Romagni (Biology, Geology and Environmental Science) have received $133,163 from the National Science Foundation for the project entitled, “ASPIRE: Appalachian Students Promoting the Integration of Research in Educations.”

Dr. Karissa Peyer, Dr. Eric Hungenberg, Dr. Andrew Bailey, and Dr. Kara Hamilton (Health & Human Performance) have requested $8,053 from the Chattanooga Sports Committee for the project entitled, “Chattanooga Marathon Research Project.”
Dr. Jared Pienkos (Chemistry and Physics) has requested $16,000 from Organic Syntheses, Inc. for the project entitled, “Synthesis of N-oxide containing bipyridine ligands for the development of transition metal imaging agents.”
Dr. Ryan Zwart and Dr. Eric Hungenberg (Health & Human Performance) have requested $465,829 from the University of Wyoming for the project entitled, “Resilient WNC Outdoors Initiative.”
Dr. Richard Walker (Biology, Geology and Environmental Science) has requested $399,460 from the National Science Foundation for the project entitled, “STAR: Integrated research and education to reveal the cascading effects of a rare but massive terrestrial resource pulse to aquatic ecosystems.”
Dr. Jisook Kim, Dr. Titus Albu, Dr. Keenan Dungey, Dr. Jared Pienkos, Dr. Steven Symes (Chemistry and Physics), Dr. Jannatul Ferdoush, Dr. David Giles (Biology, Geology and Environmental Science), and Dr. Yingfeng Wang (Computer Science and Engineering) have requested $1,068,242 from the National Science Foundation for the project entitled, “Equipment: MRI: Track 1: Acquisition of a High-Resolution Accurate Mass OTOF LC-Mass Spectrometer for UTC and the Southern Appalachian Region.”
Dr. Yunye Shi, Dr. Trevor Elliot, Dr. Hamdy Ibrahim, Dr. Mohammad Mahtabi (Mechanical Engineering), and Dr. Rahul Bhosale (Civil and Chemical Engineering) have requested $264,880 from the National Science Foundation for the project entitled, “Acquisition of a High-speed Camera for Research and Education.”
Dr. Dalei Wu (Computer Science and Engineering) has requested $250,000 from the National Institute of Food and Agriculture for the project entitled, “AI-Enhanced Microbial Soil Health Mapping for Climate-Smart Sustainable Agriculture and Food Supply.”
