The following UTC Faculty and Staff have attracted $269,478 in external grant and contract awards:
Dr. Joey Shaw (Biology, Geology and Environmental Science) has received $12,000 from the Association of Southeastern Biologists for the project entitled, “2025 Spring Wildflower Pilgrimage.”
Austin Harris (CUIP) in collaboration with Vanderbilt University, has received $19,999 from the Tennessee Department of Economic and Community Development for the project entitled, “Mobile Lidar Trailer Partnership.”
Dr. Hamdy Ibrahim (Mechanical Engineering) and Dr. Stephanie Philipp (School of Education) have received $111,968 from the National Science Foundation for the project entitled, “Hybrid Surface Coating Toward Corrosion-Controlled Magnesium-Based Implants.”
Dr. Ashley Schilling, Dr. Max Jordon and Dr. David Levine (Physical Therapy) have received $5,422 from National AMBUCS, Inc. for the project entitled, “Impacts of seating fit upon pedaling initiation and power production on an adaptive tricycle in children with neuromuscular disability.”
Susan Lazenby (WUTC) has requested and received $120,089 from the Corporation for Public Broadcasting for the project entitled, “WUTC Radio Community Service Grant.”

The following UTC faculty and staff members submitted proposals for the potential to generate over $1,656,434 in external funding, if awarded:
Dr. Rick Dierenfeldt, Dr. Tammy Garland, Dr. Gale Iles, and Dr. Katelyn Hancock (Social, Cultural & Justice Studies), in collaboration with the Hamilton County Coalition, have requested $44,998 from the Health Resources and Services Administration for the project entitled, “Nu-Start Rural Communities Opioid Response- Rhea County, Tennessee.” Dr. Iles contributed heavily to the proposal before her passing, and the team is committed to carrying forward her vision and work.
Dr. Mengjun Xie (Computer Science and Engineering) has requested $47,000 from Northeastern University for the project entitled, “2025 Bridge to Cyber.”
Dr. Mina Sartipi, Austin Harris and Dr. Hoang Nguyen (CUIP/ UTC Research Institute) have requested $350,000 from the Tennessee Department of Economic and Community Development for the project entitled, “AI-Powered Collision Risk Assessment and Post-Crash Detection for Urban Mobility.”
Austin Harris and Dr. Mina Sartipi (CUIP/ UTC Research Institute) have requested $150,000 from the Tennessee Department of Economic and Community Development for the project entitled, “Enhancing Pedestrian Safety: AI-Integrated Traffic Signal Control and Dynamic Lighting.”
Dr. Zihao Wang and Dr. Mengjun Xie (Computer Science and Engineering) have requested $527,267 from the National Science Foundation for the project entitled, “Collaborative Research: Explorations: SHIELD: Strategic Hands-on Integration and Experiential Learning in AI-Driven Policing.”
Dr. Mina Sartipi, Austin Harris (CUIP/UTC Research Institute) and Dr. Chandra Ward (Social, Cultural & Justice Studies), in collaboration with Vanderbilt University, have requested $537,169 from The National Science Foundation for the project entitled, “Resilient and Efficient Autonomous-Vehicle-Aware Large-Scale and Holistic Mobility Planning.”
