Abstract:
Foot ulcers remain one of the most serious complications of diabetic neuropathy, often caused by prolonged exposure to high plantar pressure in areas where protective sensation is reduced. This thesis presents the development of an adaptive smart insole designed to both detect and actively redistribute plantar pressure in real time. The system integrates a Poron Medical cushioning layer for comfort, a flexible pressure sensor layer for continuous monitoring, a thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) air distribution layer with embedded channels, and a 3D-printed TPU base for structural support. . A microcontroller processes sensor data and controls a micro air pump and solenoid valve to selectively inflate targeted regions, reducing pressure in high-risk areas such as the heel and forefoot. Preliminary testing demonstrates the practical feasibility of this compact, wearable solution for ulcer prevention.
