Research consistently shows an association between Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) and negative outcomes. However, research is beginning to examine positive childhood experiences (PCEs) and their ability to mitigate ACEs’ potential negative effects. Few studies examine PCEs, such as youth trauma informed mentoring, educational activities, and life skills. The current study examines ACEs in combination with an evidence-based, trauma-informed PCE – a local Camp HOPE America. Using data collected from youth at camp, we explore their sense of belonging and general attitudes during camp. Findings show that campers experienced a 30% increase in belonging after camp compared to before camp. Campers who experienced fewer ACEs have a higher sense of belonging after camp compared to those who experienced a greater number of ACEs. Despite this, campers had high levels of resilience and altruism. These results suggest that trauma-informed programming may help promote positive outcomes among youth who are exposed to adversity.
